  • According to garmin it's 16h. It's still using GPS though which surely is the biggest drain on battery life? Will find out shortly as I've ordered one.

  • The drain usually come from the screen.

  • That's why I said keep off maps screen. Either using the menu or just a data screen showing data. And keep brightness down/off. You can get an anti-glare screencover to dull the sun so you can use little brightness when it's sunny. Or if you double tap te power switch it should go full brightness. Maybe need to press once to get to brightness menu, then double tap, another double will turn brightness fully off.

  • Definitely interested to hear more about the Touring model. The reviews that I've read are terrible, which is a shame as I'm interested in the nav functionality. Wiggle do offer NOH 800s - anyone got any views on them?

Seems like decent value, but an extra £50 will buy a new model with HRM and Cadence monitors...

  • Has anyone changed the battery on an 800 and had good results (improved battery life)?

  • T4 has the Touring model and the battery life on it is rubbish. So rubbish that she contacted Garmin and they said it sounded fine - I don't know where they get the 16h claim from but it's not 16h of actual use.

I have an 800 that I've used for touring and it lasts ages - it wasn't a problem on 8 hour days with lots of faffing about looking at things on the map and changing routes etc.

  • Mine used to give me 16 hours but now it's down to about 6. That's no use when you need to be navving for 600km rides.

Does that thing you charged your phone with the other day also do Garmins?

  • ^ YACF will have all this information.

  • Well I have to say, having replaced my battery myself, it was a piece of piss, you just need a set of torx and some tweezers.

  • ^^^ Yes, the magic box of power can charge ALL THE THINGS!

  • I applied an update to the Touring, which seems to have made a difference to the battery discharge issue I was seeing. 'Box of magic' is probably the best bit of kit I have bought in the last few months. Btw I do run with the contrast on 3 bars, with the screen sleep time set to the lowest setting.

Which battery did you buy? Link??

  • I just bought one from eBay, picked a high ranked seller at random.

  • The magic box I went for is the Anker one from Amazon.

My only other minor issue with the Edge Touring at the moment is that they went MiniUSB meaning I have to carry an extra cable. Everything else I have is MicroUSB.

  • I went for one of these....

Nice and small. Shame I need to carry a pretty big lead for the 910xt.

It depends on if you use it for navigation and how often you recalculate routes vs. just for logging as well as screen brightness. I think I've got 12-13 hours out of mine before it shut down. I usually run it at one bar of brightness though.

  • Well, got the touring model in the post today and am yet to use it. For a 16000mah anker charge for it too and another for my phone so hopefully I won't run out of juice on my mere week long trip :-)

  • I've gone for dynamo hub>big battery in pannier during riding, which can then be used to charge the garmin when you stop.

This would limit the riding to around 8 hours I suspect, which at a relaxed pace would still be a good distance.

  • I'd do the same, but the battery cost a mere 26 pounds. Rebuilding my wheel with a dynamo and then sorting out garmin charger would be far, far more expensive. Though it is something I'd like to do.

  • Well I plan to keep riding for 24 hours. I'm also not carrying a gram more than I need to. So I'm stuck with the tiny battery option.

The Word is the 910xt continues to log data while charging. You just cant see it. I'll to test this though. Plus I'd like to see hoe effective the little battery is. If it takes 5 hours to charge I'll annoyed.

  • I tested this (kind of) with my 405 Forerunner.

While running an activity, charged it, took it off charge and the timer had continued throughout.

Obviously wasn't able to test GPS due to being plugged into the PC.

  • I've just uploaded all of my rides from a mountain biking trip to Wales. They all look good apart from one, this one:

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/464393888

The trace is clearly wrong, although the distance seems correct. Does anyone know what's up with it? I tried uploading that activity straight to Strava from the Garmin and it came up with the same trace but zero mileage.

Any help would be much appreciated as it'd be a shame to lose it.

  • I tell a lie, apologies: Strava also has the mileage correct but the trace seems non-existent:

  • I'm moving to Berlin in september!
    (Can't fucking wait)
And i've been looking at GPS devices, I wont know my way around and plan on exploring much of Berlin and Germany by bike.
I'be had some experiences with maps in the jersey getting wet or taking ages to find where i am, and my Iphone dieing on me while on a ride and the GPS capability along with it.
I was thinking about a Garmin 800/810 but I saw this and it fit the bill nicley.

    (what a cheesy advert)

all i really wanted was the navigation function, which this is based around and the Touring plus is like £200 cheaper, so seems perfect!
but just wanted to know if anyone has any experience with this device in the EU or just generally before I part with my money
    Regards
    James

  • My mate got one a month back. He loves it, and from having been on some longer rides with him I can see why.
It just works, and it's cheap for what it is, and it's not massive like some of its competition. I've always preferred digital maps over the little pointy arrows that some Garmins use. He gets about 16 hours out of it before it needs a charge.
The only criticism he has is that it can have a few glitches about trying to send you onto unsuitable roads eg closed roads, motorways and so on. But that's only if you ask it to calculate a route, if you upload a route then it's fine.
