Good call.
LOL if you were a lazy fecker that hasn't deleted anything from his watch for a decade. That could take ages......
....doh!

I exported tcx files from strava. Then uploaded these.
Just type /export_tcx after the web address and hit enter. Simples.

Today mt 920xt won't transfer my ride.
Nothing else on there.
No transfer all function.
can't find it via USB
Claims its finished transferring via wifi
Claims its finished transferring via bluetoothhammer time?

• #3805
You could look in the folder where Garmin stores the .fit files when transferring. I'm on phone at mo, but will tell you where to find them (for Windows 7 at least) when at PC.
Unless you've set the Garmin software to delete local files after transfer...

Just got back from a week's touring in the Midi-Pyrenees, using a Garmin Edge Touring for navigation. It kind of worked, but rather than giving me turn-by-turn directions, the Garmin just displayed the routes I had planned as a pink(ish) line and expected me to spot the turns myself.
I was expecting directions and information about how much longer I had to ride on a specific road before a turning/roundabout/whatever.
I also encountered the "Route Calculation Error" message every time I clicked "Ride" on one of my prepared routes. The route would calculate, get to 100% and then display "Route Calculation Error" shortly or immediately afterwards.
The basemaps I was using came from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/. I was using the "Routable Bicycle" versions.
I plotted the routes using RideWithGPS, downloading the TCX files to the Garmin. I had used the "Optimise for driving" option (to avoid being taken down anything resembling a bridlepath/farm track/river bed) and the "Add/Remove control point" function (to manually switch to quieter roads).
Got a "Route Calculation Error" every time (although as I say, the basic route still displayed).
Any ideas why? I wondered if it might be to do with "driving" directions on a "routeable bicycle" basemap?
But if you don't use driving directions, how can you avoid the footpaths/riverbeds that RideWith GPS delights in sending me down?

A couple of things, on the edge series generally you are much better with either a gpx track file or a gpx route file.
Ridewithgps being one of the better routing websites, I would choose bike rather than driving and then when plotting the route choose enough intermediate points in judicious places to ensure that it does not go down tracks.
Driving directions on routable bicycle works, so I suspect it is the tcx file on the edge.
I personnally find the generic routable version of the map easier to read on the screen than the routable bicycle version. -

Interesting. Thanks.
Once the route is downloaded to my Edge Touring, how would the navigation differ with a GPX track, GPS route, or TCX?
RWGPS seem pretty certain that Garmin users should only be using TCX files

Not too sure they are saying choose tcx.
From rwgps, the reasons to choose a gpx, the last paragraph being the most relevant. You have a GPS unit that doesn’t read TCX files. The eTrex, Oregon, Montana, and GPSmap series do not read TCX. You don’t care about riding a certain speed, and you don’t need the basic turn guidance offered by the TCX. If you have Garmin maps or OSM maps installed on a microSD card in your map-capable GPS unit, your GPS will provide native turn guidance and there is no need for the basic navigation offered by the TCX format.
The edge series tend to treat gpx tracks and gpx routes as the same during the conversion to fit files, which are what the edge series use. i.e you load a gpx file and it is converted into a fit file and placed in the courses folder on your device.
Some gps devices can use native gpx tracks and routes and they have their uses for different types of navigation. -

Edge units (800, 810, 1000) - GPX is best in my experience.

Still having wacky calorie burn. All parameters seem correct! Only happened since latest update but no one else I know seems to have the same issues 😫

A gpx route is a collection of way points, with the unit routing you between. A gpx track is a set of (many more) track points and these form a 'breadcrumb trail' that you follow. The unit does not routing. A tcx file has a gpx track (so there's no routing involved) in addition to a number of course points. These course points are for information purposes and take no part in the breadcrumb trail you're following. RWGPS put these course points at junctions and an edge unit will give you a distance to the next one, as well as an icon for what type of point it is (left turn, right turn, straight, end etc).
The best results I've had (with a garmin edge touring) come from using a tcx file (from rwgps) and turning off the turn-by-turn navigation. Then you use the course points as your navigation aid, so you aren't religiously watching the pink line. I think that's what RWGPS are suggesting. Whatever you do, don't use a gpx route!

Garmin noob here. I've just bought an Edge 810.
Without reading though this thread, best place for maps?
-
• #3820
The 810 doesn't need maps. It won't stay on long enough to use them :P

I sent mine back. Piece of shit isn't fit for purpose.
Much happier with the 1000, even with its shitty battery life and my 800 still does me for racing. To actually answer your question though: proper Garmin maps were much more stable on my 810 than OSM maps. But it does involve giving Garmin even more money.

@Smallfurry
I assume the menus on the 920xt are set out similar to 910xt...In which case I usually delete all activities, leaving only the activities I want re-uploaded and then use the 'Transfer all' function in the 'History' page.
