  • Depends on the unit. I think they go in the root or under /Garmin/ I'd have to check mine to see where they can be put. Or, google it.

  • You can make your own maps y just selecting the tiles that you require (assuming you're talking about OSM ones) so you may be able to get something small enough if you're not looking at too big an area.

  • Really? I don't even bother wetting my soft strap HRM.

  • m-o-i-s-t

  • Tricky one..

Had my 310xt stolen along with my house keys. Activities on the watch that start from my door.
Could the knunts find out where I live / use the keys to get in? I have deactivated the 310xt from my Garmin Connect and phoned Garmin to block the device being used with they're software.
    310XT doesn't support maps.

Just worried that theres another way of uploading data using other software..

    Thoughts?

  • change your locks

  • In progress.

  • I ran it under the tap too (it's fully waterproof so why not), and soaked the t-shirt I was wearing so it couldn't dry the area. Nothing I tried could get it to work, and that includes a 50 minute run.

The swim HR strap worked fine with the residual sweat when I tried it post exercise. The tri HR strap not. Hopefully a new strap will work.

Having to soak myself (or the strap) pre-exercise is not what I want to have to do. All the other straps just required a little lick.

  • Might try mine again with just a quick lick rather than running it under the tap. It's a little chilly putting it on when following the instructions...

Tried that first. Then a bigger lick, then wetter, etc.

If I can't get it to work even when going out for a decent run when I sweat like a bastard then it's fucked and going back to Garmin. If they're all like that then it's not fit for purpose. The fact that the HRM-Swim strap worked straight away is enough to convince me it's a duff strap. Never had a problem with any other Garmin HR strap, lick and go.

  • Tried a new battery?

  • Want to see what Garmin respond with before I open it up.

Strap reports battery as OK. Strap reporting all other running dynamics stuff fine, so it's definitely able to talk to the watch. https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/972599432

  • Hit it with a hammer

  • Thought about doing that (or at least cockpunching myself with a hammer) this morning 5 minutes after setting off on my run. Decided to do a DCRainmaker and wear both 920xt and my old 110, and two heart rate straps. The 920xt would record the running dynamics stuff from the HRM-Tri strap and the 110 would record the HR from the old HRM1 strap. I'd then try to combine the two from the resulting files using SCIENCE.

Of course, I forgot I'd paired the Forerunner 110 to the HRM-Tri strap last night to see if that worked, and I'd left it like that so I didn't get HR any data at all.

Still, it was a nice run in and these long-ish runs (11k) are starting to feel a bit easier (especially as I don't have to push harder. 6:10/km is oddly relaxing.)

920xt also giving me a 10,000 step a day goal. Arrive at desk at work having done 12,630. Will see how well the movement reminders work during the day. Ironically I used to move from my desk far more often when I smoked.

  • Fenix 3 owners: how many software updates do you get? I sometimes get through 2-3 per day, which suggests to me that its the same one failing and being tried again over and over. But there are no failed install error messages.

  • Entertaining (for all the wrong reasons) discussion with Garmin Product Support going on at the moment.

    Backstory:

I was in Colorado earlier this year, I bought the CN US maps as I have them for Europe and they seemed to do the job.

I was somewhat surprised to find that the "elevation to come on this route" screen showed this, however:

Which, given that I was in the Rockies, and a bit of advanced warning about what to expect next would be nice, and part of the reason I had bought the maps, was annoying.

Here's a route in the UK, based on CN Europe data for reference:

And now a US route with the CN USA data:

And the response I got from Garmin (I'd asked if I could exchange the CN USA map for a map that had Topo data):

    Dear Dammit,

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

I can understand your disappointment and frustration in the matter.

However, please be advised that CITY navigator mapping is not advertised as having terrain data as its purpose is to provide detailed street mapping. Topographical mapping is also available for purchase on our website.

Generally products are advertised with the feathers that they do contain and not the features that they don't.

If you are unsure of a specific feature you can always contact us with a pre buy question.

I apologise for the inconvenience that you have experienced.

  • Feathers?

That is quite lame of garmin.

  • I struggled with elevation profile as well eventually found out that you will get all sorts of 'extra' stuff along with elevation profile if you create the course with Garmin Connect; strava, ride with GPS routes dont seem to do this.

  • As above it does depend on how the course has been created to whether you get a correct elevation profile or not.

  • I created both those courses in the same way (Strava routing tool) and got totally different results.

  • I created both those courses in the same way (Strava routing tool) and got totally different results.

The mapping that Strava uses doesn't have elevation data everywhere.

  • Garmin Product support says that the topo data that is displayed when in the middle of a course comes from the maps loaded into the device, all I know is that I get topo data in the UK but not the US.

I need to buy the Topo US 24 Maps that cover Colorado apparently.

  • Can't you just download free open source maps from garmin - everywhere I've used them they seem to work fine... U.K., Lanza and turkey...

Ah, sorry, misunderstood what you were saying, I thought you were blaming it on the Strava routing tool (which can produce different results for different countries).

In other Garmin news they've finally sent me the RMA details for my faulty HRM-Tri strap so that's off to be replaced (without having to go via Wiggle). Not much of a hassle since the 920xt can pair with the old HRM1 strap I have (from my Edge 705) so I'm only missing the running dynamics metrics which I don't really have a use for. The HRM-Tri strap will come in useful whenever I do a triathlon though.

  • Retail question: Is it unreasonable to expect Garmin to pick up the tab for postage (and maybe the downtime) when I have to send another one of their products back for warranty replacement?
