From Andy P's teasing words from last night I was expecting puncture hell (a la the epic). 2 in a night isn't that bad at all.
On a tyre question: I used to use armadillo's on my bob, but the nelson doesn't have adequate clearance. Is there something similar in a 23? (dillo is 25/23 crazy size)? Or am I without puncture protection (I hate changing tyres in public).
Damo, I hate punctures too, so I use either Maxxis Refuse (cheap) or Conti 4Seasons (not so cheap). Both have done me proud.

Cheers Samolero, I'll check instore (condor?) that they fit before buying them though....

(know 4seasons will, want to try Maxxis)

I had two (different) punctures last night, on brand new Conti Four Seasons. Cost and arm and a leg! Granted, the rain and gravelly descents that caused both punctures will have made this more likely. But shit, I ride a bike, on smaller roads, down hills. My tyres ought to be able to handle that. I'll stick with cheap shit Randos.

I was steeled for rain of biblical proportions last night - so given the little bit of rain that we actually got, in my book TNRC's luck with rain holds up. Brilliant night's riding all in
lovely to read this des, nice one dude

My Brompton is now fucked. Refuses point blank to shift into the smaller gear*. I did a thorough clean-up, and I've even had the adjustable wrenches out. Singlespeed for now, till I see what a mechanic has to say :/
*it had always been somewhat reluctant to move into the non-stock 15t, even though it's the same model of sprocket they use with their stock 16t
Sounds like the chain pusher isn’t moving fully to its upper limit point, or this point is not adjusted correctly. It may need more cable tension, or the grub screw in the dog leg may have been overtightened, lengthening the whole assembly. You'll need to check that with the chain tensioner removed, the chain pusher moves fully and crisply from stop to stop and that the idler wheels are free to move side to side on the chain tensioner.
PM me your email and I'll email you the exploded diagram with some instructions.

Hopefully back in on the next TNRC.

very happy to have made it last night. kent nerver fails to deliver.
i have one more puncture to add to the ride. must have picked up a massive shard of glass on the way to the station, if only I had noticed it on the train there would have been enough time to service not only a puncture. the only thing that made the repair in victoria station difficult was the the temptation of whopperes at armlength. -

Idler wheels removed, cleaned, surfaces on idler body also cleaned. Dog leg screw done up then backed off a turn as per videos, cable tension adjusted to tightest setting after moving shifter inboard on bars (spring is taking up loads of tension in latter half of lever actuation, so definitely tight enough.
I'm going to try loosening off the dogleg screw a few more turns (it's a looooong thread, as you will know). Limiter screws backed way off so that rotating plate thing hits the end of its possible movement before even hitting the screws.
Sigh.

Fuck it, this is a spacing issue. If I push the whole tension body inboard, I can make it shift. Somehow I've got to space out the larger sprocket by 1mm or something. It's supposed to be the same 1.8mm width as discussed with Andrew @ Brompton, but it must be sitting further inboard somehow. Will take the wheel off later, rip off that circlip, and take things to the next level…

I rode on Maxxis Refuse on the very same roads as Skully last night and had no punctures.
Just saying.

And for those of you who've been worrying about the health of my Hope all day, a session in a dry, warm room has restored it to health.
Memo to self: next time you're about to head out into the rain on a TNRC ride, pop that spare Fenix in your pocket and don't think "nah, I won't need that, the Hope is golden", daft twat.

i rode maxxis refuse 3 years old at the hell of the north and no punctures

I don't really want to tempt fate by mentioning my tyres, or what hasn't happened on a TNRC yet; though I was on different ones last night, as I can't get my usuals in 16x1.25.

Maybe it's my skewed perception, but the TNRC has been a decidely masculine affair this year. I don't think there are any hard and fast rules, or legislative imperatives, but I liked it when we saw more of tika, diapo, pinky, ginag, jennyj, and so on.
I'd like some feedback from our female participants. Maybe it's just life and logistics…
Why?

(I know some of those mentioned above have been out this year, but overall, compared to previous seasons, the stats have shifted. Could it the watering down effect of sometimes having 2 rides?)
-
• #3018
^ I have to say I prefer one ride and a chasing group if oversubscribed.

Flippin' eck Skully! That is not good on hardy winter tyres. Worth a pop at Continental? Reckon they may be interested in the feedback at least.

Very quick update, as I'm knackered. Not sleeping the best. Too excited about the day's riding...Cornwall is a lumpy bitch. It rained. 110 on the clock and 3000m of climbing. Today was glorious. Sun, stunning stretches of blacktop and passed thru Devon into Somerset. Lodged up in a sweet YHA with Glasto hill in the b/rd. The steed's performing admirably, as are my legs. 11,000 cals burnt so far. Eating constantly. Got a truly epic day tmrw. 130 stretch up to Clun. Should be sweet. Oh and the Land's End book was signed TNRC.
Cheers for the message Sam. This is all I can muster. -

i decided to focus a bit on the track and the wed league, so if i do tnrc i am dead the next day. the main problem though was a stoopid boss who wouldn't let me put my nice bike inside. i was coming last tuesday as i wasn't working but the rain made me wet the bed without me even putting my name on the list. i will come back soon as i don't work in that place anymore and i need to focus on the hills as i want to do the cc climb - for the grumpies- i need to train!!!! i miss you scarlett!
are you doing lands end to j o groats? shoots

Nice one Shoots. Mate of mine started a LEJOG last Monday, he's just entered Scotland and has had terrible weather. Yesterday they had to hide in a bus shelter with hail, thunder & lightning all round. I hope yours is better!

point taken about the two rides. It has been a funny year so far. Ride 1 was massive and since then we've gone to lower numbers which is a no issue but renders the two rides approach redundant as it was introduced to keep numbers reasonable on each ride. So far the rides have definitely been better for it and may I add there has been some exemplary stuff out on the black top with people stepping up to the plate. My apologies for being too busy at work (it's that time of year) and pretty quiet on here. Believe me the summer holidays are coming and I'm going to be at the front (metaphorically of course) leading TNRC, TNRC Deluxe and TNRC lite.
Ok I'm thinking we post Potters Bar tonight for next Tuesday? Scarlett, thoughts, ?
Yes, CO2 is heavier than air but lighter than water, but you could always put a little less in if you're worried about the weight.
