I used my CX bike all through the winter as my main mode of transport, including the Rapha Festive 500, I found that the gearing was pretty good for that, I almost never changed at the front, which was lucky as the front shifting is rubbish, so effectively ran a 50 to 11-32 transmission.
I was never a huge fan of these:
So now have Hollowgrams with the modular spider.

I swapped my 50t to a 42t, maybe that explains why I am so slow.

I went to 50/34 as an upgrade, when I tore a pedal out. 50 was way to big a ring, and 34, despite not being far from 36, just irritated me.
Trial riding on a CX, is'nt the same thing as CX racing though. I cant see a 11-32 cassette being a good idea for that.

Anyway I should'nt be here. I'm not building another CX bike.

Wait, you're not building another CX bike Slowfurry?
What happen to that disc brake CX winter commuter dream you once had? with awesome braking power that doesn't get hindrence by the snow?

.
Trial riding on a CX,
Talk about making it hard for yourself, getting a cross bike over cars and over sizable obstacles :-)
I am still riding trails (and everything else) on my 36/16 as I have for the last two years. Spin to win and so on.

I look forward to reading about your imminent build.

From experience? This could be interesting. I assume it would be on the Condor Bixio-X?
From experience, yes. It was the Italia Cross back then, which Ramaye is still racing on at the highest level.

Thanks Andy. Dammit, can you pm me the shop that offered you a dura ace group under c2w?

It got axed to build the longbike. I'll be on the fatbike all winter*, and the long bike the rest of the time.
But as an all weather cyclist, living in an awful climate. Not having a beefy bike, with road geometry, and handling. That I dont mind taking out in a storm. Is going to smart.
(*hopefully not with a nice customizd Lefty fork. Bugger new forks needed before its even started)

for under a thousand you could get the rabobank team colnago for sale in another thread and have a couple of hundred left over to get you some nice steel frame as well

Good job SF is famous for his height eh, as that Rabobank is 59cm.

1x10 with a massive cassette. Seems more trail bike, than CX racer.

i am waiting for a hydraulic disc cx bike that can take a rack and mudguards for commuting
-
• #846
James, my Boardman has rack and mudguard mounts, and is currently running hydraulic brakes.

^^ +1

How well do the brakes work? How much were they?
Am inclined to wait for the time when the hydraulics are integrated.

A more solid set-up would be....
MTB cable disks + Tektro rl520 levers.
Sram 10spd drivechain + bar end levers.Slight brake compromise though.

I run a wussy 12-29 cassette with 34/46 upfront (campag) for racing, my legs definitely aren't made for pounding up vertical banks in big ring.
