  • Retroshift have a prototype of their friction shifter mounted to a TRP Hylex SS brake set up

If they do sell them with the hydro set-up, I'm defintely thinking of overhauling my Genesis with that.

  • How much would you guys pay for a BMC CX01 frameset in used but good condition?
    Anyone? Thanks!

  • What model is it and how much?

  • It's the top end model; TCX Advance 1 I think it's called.

A whole lot of money is how much it costs.

  • but a great bike (better looking in those light blue).
i'm waiting for my tcx slr 2 (the alu model).

  • Thinking of getting a cx bike for my winter commute and maybe have a go at a race

  • Doesn't it retail at like £3000 or there about i.e. hardly appropriate for this thread?

  • Title were for the original poster whom looking for a bicycle within that price range, but it's more like a cyclocross bike recommendation topic nowadays, dunno why the mod don't change it.

  • I'll ask again, whats the conclusion to the thread, what's the best cyclocross bike for under £1k

  • Unless you're advocating free money and beer you're not likely to find LFGSS consensus on anything. And even then people would brawl about currency and what beer to get... :)

Race or commute / tour? Or both?

  • Howard is correct, best is subjective to personal preference.

Some like a bit of steel, perhaps cantilevers, or disc equipped, a race geometry or a commuter geometry with a massive headtube, maybe carbon fibre for the die hard cyclecross racer, etc.

  • maybe carbon fibre for the die hard cyclecross racer.

    You mad?

Carbon frames/one crash wonders is for sponsored riders only.

  • Like I said, personal preference, I actually have a colleague whom race* with a carbon frame despite the increase risk of crashes.

He did crashed, damaged the top tube, it was now repaired for £140 and carried on racing.

    *road race rather.

  • Increase risk of crashes comes when you ride your bike around a muddy field like a nutter. Frame material is almost ...er immaterial.

  • Race or commute / tour? Or both?

    All the above

  • How's about this thttp://www.giant-bicycles.com/_generated/_generated_uk/bikes/models/images/2000/2014/2014_Giant_TCX_SLR_2.jpg

  • Doubtful, the gearing won't be to your advantage for touring (36/46 chainset).

The new (abet ugly) Giant AnyRoad fit your critique more, or even the Giant Revolt (can accept up to 700x50c).

This is why I never bought myself a 'dale SuperX.

No matter how much I wanted one :(

Rad, but not for commute / tour.

In that category I'd start with

    CAADX 105 disc
    Croix De Fer / CDF
    Pinnacle Arkose
    Surly CrossCheck
    Boardman
    Canyon Inflite
    Kinesis crosslight

Think they've all been discussed on here somewhere.

  • CAADX 105 have CX chainset thought.

  • Mmmm. Didn't stop me from getting over the Pennines on mine, but I agree it might not be ideal.

Having said that though the brief was race + commute. A compact chainset is pretty useless for racing, but a cyclocross chainset works for getting you from a-b. So I'd lean towards a CX chainset anyway if I was going to race it.

  • Surely you could put CX-specific rings onto a 110bcd crank?

  • Well the CAADX (2013 Sora) did an excellent job of getting me, my stuff and all my girlfriend's stuff from London to Cambridge on Sunday afternoon/evening.
    Slight issues:
Toe overlap with mudguards - already snapped one of the plastic cap things on the longboards.
Length of hoods (compared to SRAM) means I probably need a shorter stem.
Brakes are rubbish. I got used to them over the trip but I nearly went over the handlebars when taking my roadbike out this evening, such is the difference in power!

  • Surely you could put CX-specific rings onto a 110bcd crank?

Yeah of course, you'd just need to buy the rings, that's all.

Whereas with 36/44 you don't really have to buy new rings for everyday use.
