• Ah, that's good to know. I bought a camera (quite some years ago) and got a decent ish fee. Might have change or might be for bigger spends then. It's something like £18> for US imports I think so might be ok with this.

  • I've bought more than £15 worth of stuff from 7dayshop in the past without being hit by import duty, so I'm pretty sure this will stay under the import duty radar.

  • fotochap how is the camera working out?

  • What's the deal with the new GoPro models? What's the best option?

  • I hate that video from bbc, the block who smacked the van is a prick, me being a cyclist would want to not be very pleasant to him.

  • Lots of the little lipstick cameras don't have much battery life.
The GoPro and co only last ~3hrs. Not much point if you want to ride long..

  • can buy an additional battery with double life.... for 50 quid. ouch.

The HD Hero 2 has better quality HD recording (it's markedly better in low light situations than the original HD Hero). However, it's still quite a lot more than the original HD Hero and if cost is an issue, the earlier model is still fine for commuting duties.

If you want a GoPro without the 1080p option there is the Hero 960 - but I don't have any experience with this model.

The magistrate found the driver guilty of careless driving and a public order offence. However, your view that the cyclist is a prick is duly noted on the internet.

It is pricey, but you can just buy a spare battery for less than half that and swop it over (it only takes 30 secs).

If you use two batteries, you ideally need a 64GB card though.

  • I had one of the hong kong muvis, battery life was between 45-50 minutes.

    thats short!

  • My Muvi Atom's battery life dropped over the year that I used it for, from around 40 minutes to under 20, making it useless for my comute. I'm pondering a contour at the moment, but I'm not yet sure

Don't think the Hero2 takes 64GB cards though? The biggest volume SDHC card I could find was 32GB, but if you know of bigger that works I'd like to know!

I'd forgotten that GoPro recommend 32GB cards only. I have tried a 64GB Sandisk SDHC in my Hero and it worked. That said, I am not actually sure if it will write past 32GB as I've never tried it. Has anyone else?

I don't bother with the 64GB card as I rarely need more than the 32GB and if I do, I usually just swop 32GB cards and batteries over at the same time.

Have a demo one of these at the moment. Very user friendly, decent LCD screen built in, battery has seemed good so far, have filmed two 45min sessions on it and battery bar is still 3/4 full.

  • I suppose even if you have one of these, you'll still miss stuff. Having one pointing backwards would be equally important for those angry-wannabee-overtakers.

  • Well, helmet mounted it will pick up most everything your eyes do, so if you hear someone revving or getting a bit fresh you will probably glance around anyway. I've converted a saddle bottle mount into a camera mount for my gopro and it is pretty handy. i don't use it for commuting as much as for being able to email mates photos to taunt them about the hideous sex faces they were making going up climbs, but this of course requires me to be in front of them which isn't always a guaranteed happenstance.

  • Remind me never to ride behind über_grüber.

  • which go pro package is best for cycling? would probably want to mount it to bag straps for commuting, and possibly head cam for mtb.

how resilient are they? does the case tend to take the impacts and just need replacing (really hoping this pertains to mtb use)

There are lot of mounts for the GoPro - so you could mount it on the stem, bars, forks, frame (depending on tubing diameter), wrist, chest, helmet, head etc. However, I'm not sure how you'd get it on bag straps though. The chest mount might be an alternative, if you can't bodge it. For commuting, I use a roll-bar mount, beneath my stem.

The cases are tough in my experience (waterproof too) and they protect the camera well. I've dropped the cam on the floor at home a few times without the housing and it is still fine. If the housing does get borked, you can just get another.

MTB-Idle has some good off-road film and stuff relating to the GoPro here:

A Contour would be another good choice.

  • So I'm looking and I reckon that it's between a GoPro (availability of mounts and battery life) and a Contour (capability in lower light, richness of colour and overall image quality).

I'm going to be doing the Red Bull Weavers on Monday, not enough time to purchase any camera, but certainly an event in which I'd love to see mounted camera views of the ride.

So has anyone got one to lend for a week?

  • Contour seem to have been adding to their range of mounts recently (as I discovered when peering at these things once again)

I don't think its as big as the Go-Pro mounts still though. See http://contour.com/products/accessories for all of them. Still, its all about managing to get one.

Also, http://www.redbull.com/cs/Satellite/en_UK/Video/Red-Bull-Weavers-video-teaser-021243226856842 seems to suggest that the Red Bull Weavers thing is on today...

  • Nah, rain delayed play. Monday for the reavers.

  • I have one of these http://uk.oregonscientific.com/cat-Outdoor-sub-Action-Cam-prod-ATC3K-Water-Proof-hands-free-action-cam.html
, Yours for free, But I'll need to post it today if its to be there before monday. No better offers let me know before 4.
