  • Would agree with what everyone else has said about tyres. Also Deda bar tape is straight up shit. Colours look good on the screen but look dull in real life. The glue is shit. Half of it will stay on the backing paper. Feel is cheap and not especially grippy. Removal is also a pain. It comes to pieces as you try to unwrap it and leaves most of the glue on the bars. Worth shelling out a few quid for something better.

Thanks, will upgrade to something more decent, maybe cinelli cork?

  • Also Deda bar tape is straight up shit.

Totally agree, worst tape i ever used, Prologo cork is much better quality and about the same price

  • SKS mudguards are £4 cheaper at wiggle

A little bit less from ribble, especially so if you can get your basket over 35 to get the extra discount. Single speed chains are pretty cheap there as well.

edit: levers are a teeny bit cheaper from ribble too. Ive got these levers, the quick release is great for me as im running mini-vs

  • Cinelli should be good quality. Haven't tried prologo. I've found Bontrager cork to be good. I really like Fizik Microtex Soft Touch too but I know it's a bit short on cushioning for some peoples tastes.

  • So currently trying to build my Pompino up for under £400 using mainly new parts...
Current parts list is below - can anyone see any glaring errors? Am going for all black components with the 2012 dark blue frame

Ebay usually has a good range of second hand tyres. Obvs depends On wear and tear, but imo better to have a decent but slightly used tyres than poor ones.

  • Cool, thanks for all the help!

One last question about the cantis - just spoke to On-one and they said that the medium frames still come with a rear cable guide for cantis, can anyone confirm this?

  • Mine has it.

  • Mine has it.

Cool, do you have the 2012 frame?

  • This one.

    Terrible pic. Again.

But happy with how it's worked out, everything's pretty dialled now.

  • Awesome, thanks, looks like the same as mine...

  • i'd definitely be spending a bit more money on a headset as well, does the one you have chosen come with cartridge bearings?

i think this may be a better shout, please someone correct me if wrong.

  • Can't see anything wrong with the M Part headset, for the money. Although I have no experience with that headset in particular, I have used pleanty of loose ball headsets without issue. Most cheap cartridge headsets just come appart in the same way anyway. They might seat a bit better for the 45 degree cartridge shape but that's about the only advantage that I can see (awaits tester to come and school me on that). Also, if you look at the reviews for the Ritchey headset, they're not that good and one states that the "sealed" bearings are actually exposed.

  • All the advantages of cartridge bearings are for the manufacturer, not the end user. Anybody can go into the headset business these days with a lathe and an account at TH Industries, whereas a loose ball design relies on in-house race finishing.

  • sealed headsets are more like 'water resistant' headsets, in my opinion anyway

  • just lovely pompino (not mine):

    I really like this.

  • I am going to copy this build

Such a sweet bike. I'll be using it for some commuting, light trail and some light touring. Hopefully done by Christmas

  • What wheelsets would people reccomend for 32/35 tyres?

  • Minimum rim external width of 24mm, maximum 30mm. What are you doing on them (racing, commuting, on or off road)? Geared or fixed? Budget?

  • Weighing up the cost of a pompino suitable for bashing it through light off road areas, thinking woods in parks, a bit of gravel, nothing serious offroad, but nice offroad paths that my 23c tyres just pop at

Fixed, Id like to spend less than 150, but could go higher..

  • Halo Aerowarriors are £166.50 at Wiggle

  • Cheers mdcc, would there be any benefit in going for 48h..? im only 9 stone so im guessing not, but not sure on this offroad stuff

  • People race CX on 32h wheels, I doubt that you're going to ride that hard. For the kind of soft off road you describe, I've ridden Shimano R500s, with only 20 spokes, and they were fine, and the Aerowarrior rims are stronger than R500s.

  • Sweet, thanks!

  • Can the aero warriors be used with rim brakes? Couldn't find much with a google..

  • Apologies for not reading the entire thread, but prospective PX buyers beware. This is a picture of my friend's wheel that came with his Macinato, 5 minutes into the first ride

"we forgot to tighten the spokes" was the answer...
