  • Have you considered a Pompetamine? Takes 38mm tyres with some clearance, and disc brakes have certain advantages in crap weather.

I have set myself a tight budget. Not sure how disc brakes will fit into it, have not checked the numbers.

EDIT: Oh, it seems Pompetamine is 135mm. I already have 120mm wheels for the build.

  • I had that problem, so I just squashed the dropouts together.

  • Id like to build one of these up ss with front and back discs. does it accept from and back discs and what options do I have for a ss disc rear, is there such a thing as fixed disc?

The Pompetamine frame and fork do yeah.

Don't know of any fixed disc compatible hubs but you could use a Surly Fixxer probably. SS and disc exist but you could just use any disc cassette hub and spacers.

  • Actually it looks as though hub gears with discs may be a better albeit heavier option. This will also cost much more than I initially thought.

  • Surly do a fixed disc hub.

  • What the world needs is a double sided disc hub, so we can have a disc brake and a bolt on sprocket. If it was 20mm x 110mm DH standard, it would be trivial to adapt it to any rear fitment.

Surly Fixxers are handy, but only work with Shimano hubs, which are hardly at the forefront of hub tech these days. Also, the Fixxer attachment might not like aggressive use (e.g. off road), and you still have as much dish as the donor cassette hub, so the wheel is weaker than a proper SS build.

I know steel can handle it, but I'd rather not jury rig.

  • As long as your axle is long enough, you can just throw some spacers in there, 7.5mm each side.

  • Yes. That is a proper option.

  • If you're riding fixed - pompino frame + pompetamine fork?

  • What's the question?

  • I was thinking of a single-speed as I won't be riding clipless during winter.

  • You can run fixed with two brakes and no foot retention thought.

  • I can, but I am not sure what the advantages of that setup would be.

And the chicks won't notice I am one of the cool kids if I rock two brakes and no foot retention!

  • White is right.... YORRRRKKKKSHIRE... YOOORRRRKKKSHIRRREEEE... YOORRRKKKKSHIRRRE!
    YES! marchin on together!

  • Here's my pomp with 35c marathon winters. I think fenders would fit too. Have to say its a pretty fun snowbike!

  • I'm still looking for a fork for my pomp.

Does anyone have anything nice or nasty to say about One One's kaffenback fork?

  • Other than it's almost identical to the Pompino fork?

    ;)

For a tenner more you may as well get the fork designed for the frame in the same colour.

If you're going for the extra 10mm of clearance, I'd go carbon and get the Uncle John fork.

  • I kinda like the black forks/blue frame look for some reason.

Thanks though. I keep changing my mind on the forks almost daily basis. I think carbon's out though, since the Uncle John would cost more than the frame cost.

When the time comes where I have enough money to get them I can see myself going for the Pompino fork to make the decision easy though.

  • If no disc, cross check fork look the bomb on the pompino.

If disc, genesis croix de fer fork for the same price, straight too.

  • The CrossCheck fork does look great and on Wiggle it's a full POUND less than the Pomp fork.

  • A POUND less you said?

    I think it actually look great, better with matching colour IMHO;

  • Dr Chan has a rather nice Nature Boy fork up for grabs in the classifieds atm which would look rather nice.

  • Ooh cheers for that
