  • This* is my pompino but I don't really like it. I want to like it, but I just can't.

*now 48x16, clipless and slammed stem.

Ps apologies for god awful phone photo

  • I've had 35mm on mine, but there was no space for a mudguard so I dropped down to 32mm

Update, changed the gearing on mine (now 48x19) and I can fit 35mm front and back now.

This is how I always felt about mine.

  • ^This is the second one I owned (had a previous gen poop brown with similar set up) yet my first was way more fun but I can't figure out why.

I think I just need to make it more.. nippy. I need new tyres anyway so will go for something lighter/quicker than 28c marathon plus which I've been running the past year.

  • Hy.
At the moment I have Pompino with same pompino steel fork. For a while I'm thinking about fork upgrade. Easton 90 is to expensive, but kinesis pure cx carbon is quite affordable. Is it worth it? Does the ride quality improve? Pros/Cons ?

  • I preferred mine with the original fork to the Kinesis. Loads lighter though.

  • I'm thinking of selling my XL Pompetamine. I have been commuting on an 853 road bike and now the Pomp feels like an oil tanker.

  • I shouldnt ask but...how much

  • The oil tanker feeling is one of the things I like about my XL Pompetamine :-)

  • [QUOTE=Chris Borneo;4113435]Pompetamine's been back in off road mode for the weekend. Forgotten how much fun it is getting out there and getting muddy.

What gearing are you running on that Chris? 34/18 or 39/18 or similar?

Probably about £375 to the general public.

It is reasonably comfortable and very practical, but so is the M&S Blue Harbour range and I feel I'm a bit young for that as well.

It might be the gear I'm running, or the position or something, but it just feels like a lot of effort to ride and not as fun as it should be.

  • Depends what you want from it I guess. Love my Pompetamine. Hardly Blue Harbour imo.

  • Agree, wouldn't call my Pompino Blue Harbour. Surely a Dutch bike would be more Blue Harbour?

I can't imagine my Pompino being anything like as fun to ride with risers as it is with drops. Why not give drops or bullhorns a go? And yeah, lighter tyres, plus a 19t cog on the back, and it should be quicker to accelerate, nippier?

  • ^ agreed but then again I'm a roadie at heart.

  • "Re-branded" Pompino

    Thats mine :O

  • It is odd how small changes in your bike make it fun or boring.

experiment, different build may be hella fun.

Barn, what the fuck is that?

  • I just keep messing with my pompino. Now its got a cut down mary bar with oury grips and a inverted 110 5 degree stem 40/16 gearing and 28c tservs.

Yeah that is a bit unfair perhaps.

I just feel it's a bit bland, even though I actually do like the way it looks it just feels so sturdy and functional to ride. It does feel a bit like a Dutch bike compared to my nippy little road bike.

I find with the gearing I have at present my fixed Pompino is easier to build up to full speed. Also due to lack of gearing options I'm faster up the hills as I just grunt and power on up rather than faffing with gears on my road bike. I agree it is limited in its maximum speed but I can keep up with most of the roadies on the commute to work except on the big descents.

  • it just feels so sturdy and functional

Yeah, what do you want it to be?

  • My pompino in its new sscx guise.

  • Layback with a very short stem there.

That's a lovely setup though. What bars?

  • ^^ I'm about to change my brake outers and am wondering why your front brake cable goes up and over the bars? Am i missing a neat trick? Doesn't this get in the way.
