  • aesthetically disc brakes work better than rim brakes if you come from HHSB background. Your 'oh so precious' anodized rims will stay spotless. Email hubjub, they did £35 each deal for me on velocity A23 (non MSW) posted which I did build a wheelset out of using Hope MTB hubs for this:

  • also get an MTB hub for rear and but a bolt on cog from velosolo: http://www.velosolo.co.uk/shopdisc.html

    cheers will do.

the main reason I'm going for a disc brake up front is that I will be using the front rack to carry a fair amount of stuff and I want to be able to stop really quickly. People drive like idiots in Rusholme/Moss Side.

  • I'm advising a back disc brake too. There's quite a lot of stopping power in a front disc only, be prepared to endo. You can get one of those Paul duplex levers (can work as both long pull or short pull depending on what kind of calipers you have) and just have one lever, if you're going for riser bars (ugh) and if you care about the aesthetic of one lever.

  • ^ get a pompetamine frame

I was basically going for something that looks a but like this:

    my rat

but with full mudguards and a front rack, to use as my bad weather/going shopping/handle everything bike so I dont need to use my track bike for all of those things.

  • Sorry I havent read/gone through your build or what you want, let me get this clear; you want a single speed cx bike with discs? Then get Pompetamine F+F build it with all that in your spreadsheet and OTP 29er wheelset, you will have options of running fixed (with velosolo bolt on cogs) or freewheel. Get cable pulled disc brakes, like Avid BB5 with tektro or cane creek levers.

  • Why not just stick a disc fork, wheel, mudguards and rack on your langster if that's what you're going for?

partly because I hate the bike, but mostly because I want a project.

  • my rat

That is fuji track frame btw with pompetamine fork and deore hydraulic disc brake. I was surprised to see that it can take 35c tyres .. just about.

  • Front disk only + heavy front load = many endo situations. . It won't be such an issue if the weight was over the rear wheel.

  • ^ thats how I lost two and half front teeth. Same bike as above and soma rack. But I was riding like a cunt, doesent always mean disc + rack = endo.

  • cant run it fixed and have a disc on the back though if I'm using a bolt on cog?

the brake is there for piece of mind more than anything, I ride brakeless at the moment but didnt fancy it with extra weight.

With everything thats been said I am swaying more towards a Pompetamine again now. If i did get OTP 29er wheels, how easy is it to swap the QR axle for a bolt on?

    Endos are fun!

Maybe they're only fun at polo...

  • yea you can get bolt on adaptable hubs. Most 29er wheels would be able to do this.
Why not just run SS? You cant run disc and bolt on cog at one time.

  • Dont suppose there's such a thing as a double sided disc hub ?

  • Endos are not fun.

    Sigh...

Not easy. You'd be fine with just a non QR skewer.

  • Not easy. You'd be fine with just a non QR skewer.

Depends if his rack would work with non QR skewer or if it needs the larger diameter axle. Might be better off going for the Soma or Gamoh racks if you've not already bought the TCB. Less hipster points, more practical mounting options.

  • Yeah the rack requires a solid axle (bolt on) hub.

I'll check out some other racks.

I'm gonna sit down later when I'm not at work and rethink the build list with all this new info.

  • If you are still thinking about it, you could possibly get a Pompetamine and one of the Surly hub as below which gives you front and rear disc and fixed.

Speak to http://www.charliethebikemonger.com/ He currently stock the SS version of the hub but not the fixed one, but from previous dealings with him, he is ever so helpful with orders.

  • CETMA racks are another one to consider if you don't mind shipping from the states.

Keep Pedalling have/can get the Soma porteurs in black or stainless and I'm pretty sure they can also order the Surly hubs if they don't have any in stock.

  • I'd perhaps forego brand-new cranks. Save a chunk of money there, I always do.
Here's my build spec. Items in **bold **were purchased new.

wait, so I can get this hub in fixed and with a rear disc? That sounds like the best option for me then.

Yeah I'm gonna try and get whatever I can second hand, I'm just using the prices of things brand new to get an idea of how much money I'm going to need.

  • Yep. Do drop Charlie a message first and see what's the lead time to get it.
