    To save money. Swapouts are expensive.

    On the bars you could always try wrapping a cut inner tube around first. I did this on a set with fizik over the top and it gave a nice extra bi of cusssoning without being too chunky.

    The Dingle has definitely been worth it so far - A way of getting two gears on the bike and finding out what works for me in terms of ratios. Cost-wise, I think it's on par (or possibly cheaper than) two good quality sprockets and two lockrings.

    Not sure I've got it totally dialled yet (there are times when 44x17 is just a bit too spinny on the street, especially down long hills) but it's a decent starting point.

    At this point it doesn't offer any specific advantage over a Flip-Flop Double Fixed setup, simply because one side of my rear hub sits unused.

    However, I do plan to do the following:

    • Even up the Tooth Difference between Chainrings (currently 39/44 = 5T) and sprockets (17/21 = 4T) by fitting a 40T inner ring up front. This will ensure a more consistent wheel position in the track end, which will enable me to...
    • Fit a rear v-brake, and a Freewheel cog to the other side of the rear wheel, probably around the 20T mark. This would be used for dirt/cross-type riding. Riding Fixed on dirt is fun up to a point, but I think SS would feel more natural and allow me to properly enjoy fast descents.

    Re : Inner tubes as bar padding. I thought of them at the time, but the only ones I had laying around were ultra-thin lightweight road tubes.
    Might buy a beefy MTB/Touring tube or two and cut that up for the next wrap.

    I have a medium and I'm 5'2", but I have a tiny body and long arms and legs for my height. I was put off the small by stories of toe overlap and I also wanted the bars fairly high without a ton of spacers. Extra top tube length was no problem for me cos of my long arms and also I have an inline seatpost and only a 90mm stem.

    Only if you tell us the tyre size, shoe size, mudguard choice, pedal selection and cleat positioning preference of the prospective rider. Oh, and what fork you're planning to use, if not the stock one.

    Still contemplating a head tube swap? In that case, why not kick the head angle out by a degree while you're at it if you're worried about the front centres.

  • I'd not get away with a front mudguard on my sm pomp.my Cleats are as far forward as you can get them, ive a wide bb and 175 mtb cranks. If you're not running fixed its not really an issue.

  • Trail goes from 61mm to 67mm. That's less difference than changing from a 30mm track fork to a 43mm road fork, and I've done that without even noticing.

    Overall idea is to create a Kaffenstein, taking the Kaffenback frame and replacing the head (and down) tubes with 853 in order to run the Boardman fork with it's tapered steerer.

    With paint though this creates a £400 Kaffenback, which in the cold light of day looks like a lot.

    Pick up a cheap fork off the bay like I did. Got a 700c project 2 for about £40 and I think it looks the dog's doodahs, but I do have a bit of a semi for Kona forks. Will post a pic when I can get one taken if you want?

    I cannot think of a frame that is disc only and that takes a tapered steerer though- which is why I was going to make one*.
