  • Road hubs put the cassette 2.5mm further inboard, a road outer lines up with about the 4th sprocket, and the Hope hub supposed takes 6 sprockets at 10-speed spacing, so it's not that surprising that the sprocket needs to be pretty close to the flange if you use a road crank.

  • make sure you get a crankset/bb combo that accomodates the range of chainlines af the hope hub. the hub is made for mtbing so about between 46-52mm.

Dron, tester - Thanks for the advice on chainlines.

Just checking we're talking about the Hope EVO SP2 Trials/Single Speed hub. I think the SS hub has a different cassette to the standard SP2.

I'm going to look further into crank/BB combinations today. Sounds like the Miche may not be best option, and as I'm hoping to get the remaining parts ordered tomorrow, I should get this sorted out.

  • I've reposted last few posts to the build thread for continuity and asked for it to be moved to CP. Should probably continues this there.

  • Only if you ignore the 250g to 300g or so that a square taper BB weighs, not to mention the chainring and bolts. 603g sounds like the weight of bare cranks. Plenty of external BB road chainsets can be adapted to single speed duty, and they are nearly all better than Miche Primato..

Just interested in what are considered the drawbacks of the miche primato square taper BB? I know it's heavy and less stiff than an external BB, but isn't that true of all BB of this type?

  • Heavy and flexy like all square taper BBs, plus it's got no flange on the drive side cup so they tend to come undone, as the locking relies on the smaller diameter of the cup/cartridge interface. Also uses a shit tool interface whose shallow splines were designed for cassette lock rings not BB cups, which would be less of an issue if the cups weren't made of cheese. The bearing and seal quality isn't all that either, very much built to price specification (about $1 f.o.b. Taichung, by the look of it) rather than a quality specification.

  • FWIW I've had two Miche Primato BBs, one second hand and one from new, and ridden them in all weathers very frequently with no issues.

  • Not to disparage Tester's opinions, just my $0.02 like.

  • FWIW, the latest ones seem to have a flange on the driveside cup:

Still using a cassette lock ring spline instead of a proper BB tool spline, and still with the bearings too close together.

  • Me too. Am sure mdcc_tester's reasons are all valid, but I've never had one of these undo itself, the bearings have always held up, and I've installed and removed without issues.

  • Just incase anyone else is interested, I contacted Upgrade today and aparently the latest batch of Kenisis DC37 forks aren't due to leave their factory in the far east untill at least the 12th of March.

  • ^That's shit.

  • Pomp build to begin this weekend! I'm excited.

  • Rack is on. Need to find a box now. Love it.

Pomp in my favourite bike right now. Want to do it up more, but then it wouldn't serve it's purpose of - dont care about it commuter/beater.

  • Found these the other day in case anyone is interested. They are the 395mm A-C version with disc mount and canti so good for Pompino or Pompetamine. Bit heavy but super strong. Might work as a temporary measure for someone.

  • In case anyone's interested, I just got notification that these On-One carbon forks are back in stock.

I also received my Cotic carbon forks last week and they look excellent. Stupidly light. Nice and plain - kind of black with some carbon weave visible. Disc mounts only (which I like), but they also do a version with canti braze-ones. Would upload a photo, but they've gone to my LBS because I've had to bail out of the build.

  • That look good, no mudguard eyelits or anything?

  • Those On One forks are 450mm A-C tho.

  • That look good, no mudguard eyelits or anything?

    Not that I recall Ed

  • Today I followed a bloke through Clapham Common on a pomp who had some really nice crabon-looking canti forks. I thought they were the uncle John ones but I checked the website and the Uncle John have big red bits on.

These were all black, had quite wide blades on which were laterally fairly thin and had an On One logo on the crown.

We parted ways before I could say "nice bike" and then he looks down and OHMYGOD I've got the same back and then we'd laugh and embrace.

  • IIRC On One used to do a version of the pompino called the Pompino Pro which had carbon canti forks. They seem to have disappeared now, but seems there's definitely a market for a carbon cross fork that would suit the pomp's geometry.

  • there's definitely a market for a carbon cross fork that would suit the pomp's geometry.

One that is well served by a variety of manufacturers, since 395mm A-C forks are pretty common.

  • I think the problem with Pomp forks is that it nobody (with the possible exception of Orient Express crabon) is going to produce a fork that makes sense for use with a £99 boat anchor frame. There are loads of forks out there that are perfectly suited to the job - not 10 minutes ago I was looking at these http://www.3tcycling.com/forks/luteus - but when you consider the cost, it's just not worth it.

  • So if On-One started charging £400 for the frame, which is what a butted 4130 frame would cost from a boutique builder, it would be fine to put a £300 fork on it, but because they only charge £99, it's suddenly not worth it?

  • Sanddancer you seem to be missing the point. Its £99, but its a ridiculously good deal at £99.

  • ^This.

Pompinos are like any other mass-produced otp steel frame except you're getting a bargain. If you look at weight alone it basically weighs the same as the nature boy for a fraction of the price. Not sure many people would call the nature boy a boat anchor frame but then again it does cost 400 quid…
