Anyone know anything about disc brakes?

  • I have never noticed it, 1 1/8" or Tapered steerer. Even if it was a tiny bit, it would still make discs way better than any rim brake.

  • I never said it's a valid reason not to go for disc, just that it does happen, most commonly when quick release wasn't tight enough.

  • This!

    Rim brakes can >>>>>>>>

    ;)

  • Quick Releases are dead.

  • That's user error not the fault of the brakes.

  • Arguing that rim brakes are better than disc brakes is like saying rubbing sticks together is better for starting a fire than a lighter.

  • It's more authentic.

  • Just swapped the shitty horrible Promax rotors on my bike for SRAM Centreline, SO much better! Quiet, smooth, look a lot better too.

Also apparently a lot sharper too, as I might have made a rookie error trying to align the caliper with the wheel moving, and have successfully sliced the end of my finger off. Through the nail.

Ouch! Don't let the UCI hear that.

  • They'll just ban mechanics from touching them

  • Fuuuuuuu

Hope you haven't lost much :-/

  • Ouch

  • I recently purchased 4 pairs of brake pads from uberbike. The Kevlar version. No idea what it's like but I shall report back. I think it's supposed to be somewhere between organic and sintered. The marketing jibberish said something I didn't understand.

  • I fitted a pair to my rear brake last week. Very impressed with them so far, good bite when you need it.

  • Ah nice. I was gonna buy just 2 pairs to try them out but you can get 4 at a slight discount and figured it's almost the same price as the swissstop for a single pair so just went for it. Glad to hear I've not wasted £25! Looking forward to some fresh pads.

  • If they're anything like the Superstar versions, I'd second andyp's opinion

  • So QQ - I am about to fettle with disc brakes this weekend for the first time. I have a set of Shimano XTs on an MTB. The front brake has one of the pistons moving when squeezed, but not the other. I have used the advice on here to clean, lube and push the piston back into place. Same thing happens though. No wheel or pads in place.

Are they likely to just need centreing? Or bleeding as well?

  • New brake time.

  • LOLWUT? Serious?

  • have you properly cleaned the sticky piston

ie pushed the sticky piston out (while keeping the one that moves static), cleaned it down with isopropyl alcohol, and then painted the sliding surface with more mineral oil? then push it in and out a bit to relube the surfaces

other manufacturers make serviceable calipers, but in general shimano are not designed/intended to be taken apart and rebuilt.

how old are the brakes? could be a warranty job

  • time to get cantis

  • Where's @Howard with a sensible answer when you need him?

  • Kinda, you can probably fix it with more cleaning like @dancing james says, but if not then new brake time.
