Except cantilevers, they can fuck off.

I only have two hands though.

Thanks for the comments, more thinking to do for me before I pull the trigger I think.
Partly I think I have never thought my calipers have not done what I need them to do, but most modern (carbon) roadbikes with clearance for decent sized tires and mudguards seem to come with discs now.
I have Cantis on my Mercian and they are frightening in the wet.

Condor is selling lengths of Jagwire's spendy KEB-SL compressionless housing £8 for 2m. I got two and that did a full length run on the disc brake commuter and enough for a road bike too.
Absolutely transforms the feel of CX77 calipers. Highly recommended upgrade.

£8 eh? that's a pretty amazing offer.

That's why I was happy with the BB7 set up in the past, felt like hydraulic.

I go and buy a pair of spyres for a build. Then I buy the frame (expected in January) and now I realise the rear mount is flat mount and that isn't the same as the spyre fitting?
Is that right?
Does a spyre caliper fit a shimano flat mount thingy? -

Will the below allow me to fit my spyre to a flat mount fitting?

Welcome to the world of disc mount adaptors.
I think TRP do a flat mount version. If yours aren't, then you should be able to get an adaptor that will mean they fit.

I've just had a quick google for a flat mount one from trp and it looks like they are releasing it next year. I might buy the adapter for now and when the flat mount is available just do a swap and sell a second hand spyre. Thanks!

That cable entry...

Haha yeah, cheers. I ask questions and go straight to google as well...
I think, judging from the blurb that the adapter posted above will do the job. Don't wanna have to wait for the flat mount spyre to be released. I've been waiting 7 months for this build and I'm one of the most anxious people ever so this is killing me.Edit:
Out of stock at crc so got this one from sigma. Fingers crossed its the right one?

Got the above mount and fitted it to the spyre caliper. Seems to be the right thing for the job, now left with 2 threaded holes that should line up with the frame mount.
Not as clean as the flat mount caliper though obviously... Will purchase one when it's available...

I have an mtb with conti's and they are rubbish. They are properly set up. In the wet they work in a very so so fashion. Mud gets caught around the brakes if it's claggy and it often is.
I don't use my v brake bike when it's wet. The kit on it is far too nice. My disc brake mtb's have no problems in the mud. I like old kit but I struggle to find redeeming features for cantilever brakes apart from they look good on a old bike.

Then maybe they're rubbish cantis. I've never gotten on with or been able to get much performance out of the Suntour/Pedersen 'Self Energising' cantis but there's as many shit V brakes around as there are shit cantis.

Indeed, much more common, like rubbish calipers brakes on old bicycles.

All cantis are rubbish cantis.

I fitted some spyres to a bike yesterday. When clamping down on the levers the brakes are solid. As expected. But there is a tiny amount of back and forth play in the brake pads sliding in the brake body. So I can rock the back back and forth (talking tiny movement but noticeable when stationary). Is this normal?
-
• #1096
Yeah, just the pads moving a bit. If you want to double check it's not your headset then hold your headset as you do it or turn the front wheel 90 degrees, or both.
-
• #1097
Definitely the pads. I can visible see them rock forward and backward with the wheel. Only talking 1-2 mm either way but wasn't sure if it was how I set them up or normal. Thanks! Now to ride it!

Can anyone recommend a decent option for replacement pads for the TRP Spyre? I want to have a spare set in the tool box but no idea what to get. It's for wet or dry roads, no off road at all really. This whole organic or whatever has me at a loss.

Shimano Deore M515 are cheap and seem to have a reasonable lifespan.

Superstar kevlar strike a good balance.
Y'all just need to learn to set up your cantis.
They may not have absolutely the power of a well set up good quality V but they have the benefit that you could drive a bus down between the pad and rim and the lever still feels nice.
Horses for courses with hydro discs being the obvious winner in terms of outright power and zero rim wear but every kind of brake has it's place.
