Wicked ride guys, thanks so much! Really enjoyed the pace near the front though I couldn't keep up the last couple of miles, and ended up with the second (wrong-way-round-westminster) group.
Also a big thanks to the three who stopped to help when I stacked it on OKR on the way in.Dan

To everyone I did meet, thank you for making me feel welcome on my 3rd day in London,

No worries Dan, just glad to see you get up after a fall like that. I was 3 bike lengths behind you in the other lane when it happened, from there it looked pretty nasty. Good on you to be up and be running again in minutes.

Never fails to puzzle me as to how stupid people can be to cycle brakeless track bikes on a road group ride.
-
• #492
who was brakeless?
-
• #493
I dont know any names.
But there were several people riding without a brake.
Same on most if not all forum rides I've been on.
Stupid and dangerous to be riding a track bike not on a track, in a group. -
• #494
kevin, i don't know. i have a brake, but my riding style is brakeless i guess, in the sense that i view the brake as being for emergencies, e.g. i didn't use it at all on the marathon ride. i think it's more important that people behave predicatbly and with more checking behind/around them and signalling than usual because on a group ride the gaps between us are smaller.
i agree that there was some lax etiquette and the odd moment of erratic or inconsiderate riding but i don't think that's primarily a brake issue. if there is some specific incident you're referring to, i didn't see/hear about it
-

on a separate issue, i didn't really like the way we ran some of those red lights. i RLJ plenty but always when safe and polite to do so. we were taking the piss. only reason i went through every time is i didn't know the route at all so i couldn't afford to lose touch with the front!!

++++1 re. the pictures, Fasih, a great record of a superb ride.
@Pootsmanuva, my absolute pleasure. It never fails to cheer me, how forum events attact such a motley selection of thoroughly good eggs.
Thanks to everyone for turning up, and adding to the wonderful atmosphere.

the whole "brakeless is stupid" thing is less important than having a rider that's skilled in riding in a group, i.e. constantly indicating when moving, calling out your position if coming up behind someone, pointing out potholes and obstacles etc. it's all about group etiquette. the brakeless riders last night were very skilled on their bikes and seemed to be doing a lot of the above.
the riding into oncoming, over roundabouts, RLJ'ing, going round the roundabout the wrong way and all the other more "dangerous" styles of riding were the effects of having a very fast moving group that was loosely organised. even though i never ride like that at all, it was very fun. -

Stupid and dangerous to be riding a track bike not on a track, in a group. If there is one person on the forum who cannot talk about dangerous activity on a forum ride, I think it might be you.....!
