  • ^ ok, but people have joined the above list and may not realise it isn't happening on Sunday morning. also the other thread doesn't have a date in the title so folks that don't grasp through the thread might not know.

  • for 'grasp' read 'trawl'

  • I'll put it in an email... not to worry.

  • Without wishing to undermine this ride, I just don't see the appeal in doing it the night before, to me there is something special about cycling round those roads at 6am.

So I'm going just going to do the ride earlier, when the roads are still open, starting at 5am, finishing before the first roads close at 7am. Feel free to join me, or otherwise I'll do it alone.

You do realise that 7am is the "Anticipated" road closure time. They (the police and the marathon forward command) can close the roads earlier and probably will if the trucks carrying barriers and stuff just arrive a little early.

The 7am time applies to most of the route except the middle bit... but does apply to the latter parts near Embankment, etc. You need to clear the whole course before they close the end, and you've got to do this knowing that as 7am is advisory they could close them at 6am or 6:30am just fine.

If you really want to do this, I would strongly suggest a leave time of 4am.

The reason the night before was proposed, is simply because meeting at 3:30am for a departure at 4am is just not a fun option. Barely no sleep, cold, slightly stressed due to the risk of run-ins with the police if you have punctures or find yourself going slow.

And large groups of cyclists move slower than individuals... much slower (unless you're a club team and know through-and-off).

I think your nuts for considering it... either it's going to risk being kicked off, and since you've all been warned in advance and police are at the end, it likely risks run-ins with the police.

And if you push it earlier you just end up with a ride that still isn't the closed-road marathon ride, it's just a freaking early hour of the morning ride... in which case doesn't the night before, a beer and a night's sleep sound more appealing?

    Still, your choice.

  • If it's just 1 or 2 people and the route does get closed/the rozzers stop you, you can just cycle off somewhere else.

  • I think your nuts for considering it.

Crazy? probably yes, but for me early mornings > late evenings.

I might do both rides, the evening one, and the morning one, but I really want to get that early morning atmosphere.

And don't worry, I'm not going to get in trouble with the police, if they do close early I will just go round it like Sumo says, or leave the course if they ask me to.
