I'm likely to be heading down a little earlier with the other half. If people are interested in aiming to be there for late lunch then give me a shout.

PS I'll be on the guineas run too for last minute planning.

Ben the camping people emailed saying it's fine to change names, so send me your name, address and email.

13.00 train works for me. As would a groupsave - do not want pricey train tickets. Thanks braker.

• #156
Think I'm going to do this as a day trip...
-
• #157
I might too. How early d'you have to get up?
-
• #158
Never mind, I have remembered I am capable of finding information on the internet. Wow, there's a ferry that leaves at 3am. I am tempted to ride down there and get that one. It sounds very ancient mariner.
-

The 3 am ferry can be very interesting with the added bonus of sparkling conversations with those returning to the island after a night out in Portsmouthy/Southsea!!!!

I'm up for the 13.00 train and groupsave too.

Jaygee and I are doing the ride but starting from Yarmouth (we'll be staying in Lymington on the other side of the water).
I can't wait! I had an amazing time last year, although the weather was tough and I was on my own most of the time.

Ben - I've emailed them. It will be fine whatever happens as I will be there. You will need to pay them the wopping amount of £7.20 when you get there though.
Would it be silly to do this on gears and ride back, taking advantage of £5 train fare down?
I'm still down for the groupsave at the moment as I probably won't do this. But like the idea. Hmm. -

Hmm +1

thansk Fox, I have to say I have taken a fair bit of slack for the campsite choice (would rather not ride it all on my lonesome) as the other side of the island is supposed to be lovely... meh

• #169
The island's always greener on the other side...

The Randonee route has no hills greater than 10%
what's blackgang chine then?
-
• #173
^ Ah it's not that bad.
I'll be starting in Cowes, so will hang about at a cafe filling myself with a full English on coffee while waiting for the rest of the fixxie skidders to arrive.
-

Will also be joining later. Me and spybot are riding back, so we're getting a different (£7.50 single) train down from Victoria. It gets in to Portsmouth Harbour at about 2 so we should be able to hook up with everyone else after a bit of hanging about for the 15.15 ferry.
Is there a way of getting any money off the ferry fare? £20 return seems quite pricey, but I know nothing about ferries to the IoW and their website is awful.

There was some sort of voucher kicking about in the thread last year.
Quick check for my own benefit says the ferry is £10 each way and flexible, but on the way out i think we should aim for the 15:15 to arrive at the campsite with some daylight. So train at 13:00?
Train price seems to be the same from Victoria or Waterloo. There are very cheap £5 single fares available in advance to Portsmouth, but the single fare back to London is a flat £28. The best bet looks to be some groupsave action on the day which should work out £17 each rtn.
