  • I hate wearing fluro stuff, so I light up instead. Nothing crazy, 1 Smart 5 LED and a helmet single LED up front. Knog and Smart 1/2 watt at the back.

I often wonder though, if hit by a vehicle, what would be my rights? According to the CTC lighting regs we also need front, rear and pedal reflectors for our bikes to be legit.

  • reflectors are just for bikes being sold.

  • I always removed the reflectors and make a dream catcher out of them.

  • First thing to rip off a new bike :-). But if you lack the miminum requirement you can be held partly responsible for any accidents. There are some caveats around the age of your bike if pre-1985

    Details on CTC site: http://www.ctc.org.uk/desktopdefault.aspx?tabid=4071

I will still not roll with reflectors though.

  • does 3m on the back of your shoes count I was wondering, as spds don't have reflectors?

    Nope, it's definitely 2011. We're doomed.

  • Awww crap!

  • I always removed the reflectors and make a dream catcher out of them.

you need to let your dreams run free.

Good point. Not many pedals do now.

Someone on the forum, maybe Mr M Tester, made the point that pedal reflectors are incredibly visible due to their movement.

It could go on and on, a nodder may argue that his Altura Nevis coat is better than a front reflector.

With those lights you mentioned, you're already pretty visible, so argument will still be in your favour rather than the other.

  • Thanks Ed. I can now focus my worry on more important things.

  • does 3m on the back of your shoes count I was wondering, as spds don't have reflectors?

    Not unless it's red.

  • Sidi Dominators have reflective bits on the back. They're like well safe and shit.

  • I glow when I cycle

  • Like a lady?

  • Clive glows like a horse.

  • I glow like a worm.

  • Word

  • ^ I think that means something in youthspeak.

  • When I was a kid I put my sister's glow worm on top of a light bulb to charge it up faster. Naturally it melted into a big gooey blob of toxic plastic.

She cried and cried and cried.

  • Fox, get the rechargeable pack, they come with 2 rechargeable battery and even though it last for about 2-4 days, it's useful especially when it run out, just pop in a new one and place the old one to be charged.

Don't you have the Hope Vision 1 though? isn't it enough for you?

Hmm, I'm considering it. Burn time is much longer with non-rechargables, and they are silly cheap on eBay (as low as 50p each). But environmentally not good, and the rechargeables are lithium, so I will probably get them.

More than enough, but if it goes flat and I don't have spare batteries to hand I only have a three LED front Knog. Don't really like riding with just that, I find traffic more likely to pull out on you than with a bright front light.

Also it would mean on night rides when the Hope suddenly runs out I could turn the Exposure on and use that.

  • You could just carry a spare set of fully charged batteries, rather than a spare light? Cheaper that way.

  • Sitting in the car in traffic recently I was passed by a cyclist with a nice powerful rear light fixed to his rucksack. This light, however, quickly dissappeared as he got further ahead of me until it was totally obscurred by the rucksack so don't just buy a decent light but make sure it's visible too!

With Exposure, you will know when it go flat if the light is dimmed, but still bright enough to be seen by other - this is their way of saying it's time to recharge.
