  • Yes, a good point. I forgot to add that I found it was quite easy to get back into play to stop a break happening if you went behind goal with a LOT of speed, and the move should only be attempted if the defensive team are quite static at the time.

  • Yeah, absolutely, speed is key.

When I, Andy, Hyper do this circling the goal thing, it's in those double/triple goalie situations and I'm usually trying to find an angle for a sneaky shot or pass. By definition, in those situations the defense is static and my momentum can get me back in time to quash any pathetic attempt at a break. Sometimes it requires my teammate to pressure the opponent with the ball, but I can get back to mid-court pretty darn quick, thus blocking the pass.

I haven't really tried Stu's take on it as a rebound thing though. I've always done it when I have possession.

Talking about polo moves is so hard. We need proper words for things!

  • what info do we want on this flyer then? I'm going to re-do the logo for stickers, and do a tee design or something too

  • website
email (does the website have its own)
    locations + times
photographs of representatives from minority groups as discussed at the meeting
a sentence explaining beginners can borrow kit

  • Flyers done. I tried to use, inviting colours, and a font that looked like American 'jock' style to make it look like cool.

Let me know if there is something not quite right, but if not I will go ahead and get some printed.

  • pic is squiffy

  • I've got the flyer mock up in indesign if you want me to email that to you matt.

  • I've typed the minutes up, where do you want them posted?

  • Dunno where to put the minutes. Here? Too public?

I set up an email address for the blog birminghambikepolo@gmail.com. I'm happy to give the password to anyone who wants it.

  • I think we should put them on the blog.

  • Okay, PM me your email address and I'll invite you to be a contributor.

  • hey, good to see birmingham are going to be at the bristol tournament! i was wondering how you were planning to get there? i'll be in birmingham at that time and plan on getting the train, maybe i could tag along with you? i'm also going to be free everyday if anybody wants some pre tournament practice!

  • I'm driving down, most likely with my teammates. I'd offer a lift, but I can only take three bikes.

EMM was on about coming down to watch, so there may be a train group.

We'll be playing Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings/early afternoons between now and then, though...

  • I think I missed something. What's going on in Bristol?

  • Indoor tournament. Single court, so only 20 teams. Registration opened on Monday, but filled up within minutes.

I put details in one of the threads, but I guess it is easy to miss with all the waffle we spout. In future I'll make separate threads (I usually do, anyway).

Me, 4ndy and Hyper are playing together - there wasn't enough consensus/availability for a second team.

  • Minutes are up on the blog, thanks Neil.

    Ideas/principles for video:

    • Show that we are normal people, not (just) hardcore-punk-anarcho-vegans (Lucas, Asim, Jess/Mya, Rob to highlight out diversity/inclusiveness)
    • Show that we try to balance beginner-friendliness with competetive play.
    • It's not as dangerous as you might think/you can take it as seriously as you want. Maybe no face cages?
    • We lend out bikes/mallets to anyone who wants to have a go.
    • It can be cheap (Raz uses a 'normal' MTB) but there's plenty of potential to be a spendy tech geek (my bike is on the way).
    • Opportunities to go to tournaments, which are fun and social, in the UK and abroad, pretty much every weekend.
I think we need to remember that this is a recruitment video, not a show-off video. It would be nice to show some skilful/beautiful plays, but I reckon that should be balanced with lots of talking/mini-interviews with players. We have to look likeable...

    This.
Combined with pushing the website and facebook page is an easy way for people to access bike polo. I don't think lfgss is a good vehicle for promoting polo.

  • I seem to have lost my gloves. They are black and grey with a big 661 logo on the back of the hand. Did anyone pick them up?

  • That's ginormous for polo!

  • Yeah - mountain bikes are generally longer than road/track bikes. MTBs only work well for polo if you get them mega-small, like 15" for most people, maybe 17" for big boys. And old-school geometry, too.

  • We need to measure our courts! I'll bring a tape measure on Sunday. MG/Asim, can one of you measure the Small Heath courts as you live near(ish)?
