  • You could wait till they need resoling?
Personally I’ve persisted with leather soles but finally given up....for now at least.

  • If he values the back of his skull?
Or enjoys the weird donkey kicks you do on wet days....
    Yes I’m grumpy about it

  • Rubber soles for winter, leather soles for summer, innit.

  • I’ve never binned it with leather soles - but I do avoid wearing them in the wet, largely because of the potential damage the water could do to the shoe.

Worth having a few pairs that come from the factory with a rubber sole imho rather than retrofitting to leather soles.

  • Vibram stick on soles are made of unobtanium. So hard wearing.

  • No - maybe a metal toe protector.
Yes. Topies (rubber half soles) is standard practice.
You could wait till they need resoling?
    Depends.
Rubber soles for winter, leather soles for summer, innit.

  • Seeing those indy’s caused another google search for some for a good price... behold these offerings, no doubt they’re shite but thought I’d share!

  • mine were double that but I reckon a bit better

  • I’ve had 2 pairs of shoes resoled at factory and 1 by a cobbler with a sole suitable to the shoe and all have been great. I now only own to leather soled pairs.
Old flagstones are the worst combo I find.

  • Also picked up some Pantherella socks in TMaxx. 2x 3 packs £6.99 each

  • Bargainz, where from?

  • Drakes - luckily they gave me the inside scoop so I managed to pick these up. I always have to hold myself back in that place!

  • Ps swap you for the Sinn 🤪

  • Ha, well if they were the color 8 penny loafers you might’ve persuaded me.

Drakes on Saville Row or the factory shop?

  • Indys I find so comfy, but I find i never seem to wear mine as get caught between what I actually usually wear like trickers/quoddy oxfords or just proper boots like redwings.

  • And actually normally just in converse

  • Factory shop - they just got the new last seasons stuff in today

They’ve got some size 9 samples of their own shoes including some mint driving loafers. I’m not a size 9

  • They’re next on my Color 8 list. Or perhaps the low vamp color 8s... spenny though. Obviously.

  • As a caution to anyone driving loafers tend to come up small in my experience. I’ve yet to find any that aren’t over £400~ that fit I’m a UK 12/13.
Anyone looking I’d recommend Bobbies about £130, given how quickly this sort of shoe wears.

  • Er, dibs indys!

My dad has switched to rubber soles. Mainly opting to spaff £ with C&J and Trickers than resoling. But also some covers and resoles as shoes have needed resoling anyway.

He is in his 70s, clumsy and also wears Crocs indoors. I may be wrong, but I feel like that's not you.

I don't have to be as smart for work anymore, but previously my system was:

    • Rubber covered Oxfords for rainy days
    • Rubber sole smart Loake boots for winter and really bad weather
    • Mix/rotation of leather soles all the rest of the time.

Worth saying that I used to almost always get changed at work, so generally wasn't walking to/from work.

Also worth saying unfortunately I'm an irrational snob on some things. I believe rubber soled leather shoes have a place, but should be the exception and the default should always be leather.

  • I generally would have agreed with the above, and do prefer the appearance of a leather sole, but do find that they wear out so much quicker than a hard rubber sole/heel (dainite or similar) with the latter also being more comfortable.

I've ended up rubber covering my leather-soled Trickers which are in regular rotation. Have kept leather soles to my summery leather-soled loafers though.

Obvs if you are picking up a sale bargain then you get what's on offer but if paying full price I think I would opt for a dainite sole which looks identical (unless you spend all day with your feet up on the table like some kind of alpha business man).

This is how I imagine all users of this thread.

Other than DJ obvs, who I picture living on the set of a Filson shoot
