  • 6 foot 5 mate, 60cm should be nice - top tube length will be fairly neutral with my reach

  • £160 for 501 30yo frame >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    This.

I've got a banana frame in the shed £200?

    Anyone?

  • Can I let rip? Without my contribution he has already whinged that we are unfriendly so clearly it's not me upsetting our highly gifted new members.

  • Don't rattlecan it and don't even think of the word 'peng' and it should go nicely for you.

    Just be friendly.
    Start now.

  • actually, scratch that...
This is the most unfriendly forum in the whole wild web, after all.

I never once claimed to be gifted, I admit to being very new to this! Won't be rattle can spraying any of it. Know a few places who do good powder coating so intend to do that. My aim is to make a very fast road going training bike, tall gear purely for boosting cardio ability etc.

  • So boring sifting through everyone's "this is how it works around here/learn to use the forum properly" messages to find anything worth reading...

Why do you need to powder coat a new frame? that factory finish is far better than powdercoat.

  • Actually that bring me to ask you a very important question - are you certain that the frame will fit you fine?

Doesn't know how to use an internet forum
Doesn't know how to use eBay
I am putting a fairly safe bet on not knowing what frame size to buy

  • Guys it's Christmas!

    We all probably share the same opinions on the quality of the thread and bicycle, but maybe today it's best to be nice and say;

    • "Welcome to the forum. Enjoy building your first bike. Raleigh's can have some funny sizings you may need to check and here is not the place to ask. You can find this by searching through mechanics and fixing and buying a set of callipers (which you need so just buy them).

Read through the forum before starting another thread. Posting in threads is better than starting your own.

Oh and when you use the search function there is a very useful feature to filter **out **the classifieds (because they get in the way of useful info):

    search options
    Find Threads with Prefix
    no prefix

    ...oh and HTFU/come to drinks/etc/etc"

    Merry Christmas :)

  • sam, you need to manage your expectations. Just because you are really excited that you are building your first fixed wheel bicycle doesn't mean that other forum members are obliged to share that enthusiasm.

From the point of view of someone who has posted on here since '07, there is really nothing of any interest or relevance in this thread beyond the fact that you're excited. It's great that you're excited, but frankly, what the fuck do you want us to do about that?

I have seen literally thousands of threads like this, and thousands more posts in current projects. In fact I have even seen other models of that exact frame posted on this website. As have countless other users. Threads that this community value are those that provide original content, or that are funny, or informative. Yours thus far has been none of those things. Sadly the internet removes many people's self restraint, and thus you've had a rough time of your first thread, but I thought I'd just explain the reasons beneath the aggro.

We aren't an internet-based gratification service. We are going to yell 'WOW COOL FIXIE MAN, YOU'RE SO RAD' or 'CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOUR BIKE FINISHED, LOLOLOL' every time someone posts an ebay ad of an old steel frame.

    Sorry about that.

  • ^ aren't ;0

  • ^ olivier slick :)

  • It uses Allen key brakes?

Don't forget to take your Allen keys each time you lock it up.

I'd suggest an upgrade to those Allen keys with a moulded plastic handle, they are more comfortable/ergo than plain metal ones and will not get so cold in the winter.

Come on people it's Xmas, he needs all the help he can get.

  • The are decent frame being made with 501, that Raleigh is an example.

£160 is quite high though, but not unreasonably high.

It's very obviously Ilkeston built (top eye on seatstay is the clue).

One year around when this was built Raleigh had a continental pro team. Gerald O'Donovan built training camp frames in 501 for the team but badged them as 531/753. The team loved the frames, and many of the 501s were used all season in the big races.

Gerald often used 501 down tubes in the larger team frames for strength and stiffness I understand.

You've got a good frame, that will handle superbly.

Re: Allen Key brakes are these the type? Only ever owned MTB/hybrids until now, searched Sheldon and no images/description of Allen key brakes - however from what I can summise the caliper is attached to frame via a sleeve type nut?

    Look fAirly decent

  • Yes, these are they.

You may need to experiment with the allen key "sleeve" nuts to get the right length for your frame. Usually though, for a steel frame, the ones supplied with the brakes will work.

Almost all brakes are now allen fitting, so you have a huge range of types and price to choose from.

  • Sorry

    Was taking the piss.

  • ha

Nice one mate. It's my understanding that modern brakes were mostly nut/bolt? Hopefully I'll win that auction now

@ Prancer: taking the piss? Quelle suprise...

  • Nope, old brakes were mostly nut/bolt, however in Condor they sell a long reach brake with nut/bolt.

Even so, a good bike shop should enlarge the rear hole of the fork to compensate, so it's not a problem.

So not the shop Ed works at.

  • I too expected to see a beautiful bouncing baby. I think the frame is nice. But are you sure a 60cm frame is enough for all 6' 5" of you??? What's your leg length?

  • Yeah my inside leg is 72cm, with seatpost saddle etc will be fine chap.

Should arrive Thursday/Friday - can have a good look then and post few pics in projects thread.

Want them dura ace brakes now
