  • That was nice and we must do it again soon. I await the suggestions with interest!

  • OK, there are two venues that I consider worth checking out for a veggie visit, both of which are in the Notting Hill area, have a decent range of vegetarian options and do proper Mexican food, not Tex-Mex: the Taqueria (review) and Santo (review). If you have a look at the menus, you'll see that every section (starters, mains, sides) has plenty of vegetarian options. Vegan options are slightly more constrained because of cheese or cream (queso fresco is also cheese, btw) although in several cases you could ask them to leave out the cheese without affecting the character of the dish.

Both of these are really good restaurants. I'd slightly favour the Taqueria because it's cheaper and has a wider range of traditional dishes (and the service is quicker). On the other hand, Santo is a little more daring, has many more Nopales (cactus leaf) dishes and makes it a little easier to avoid dairy products. But I'd be delighted if either of them were our next choice for a veggie nosh up :)

Stand-out dishes for me: the Aguacate at Taqueria (beatifully simple dish, amazing flavours) and their Sopa de Tortilla, the Escabeche (Mexican-style pickled vegetables) and any of the Nopales dishes at Santo. But there's a huge range of veggie options at both. It isn't all steak and fish.

There's also Casa Morita, a great new Mexican place in Brixton, which I recommend to anybody for a visit, but I wouldn't suggest it for a proper forum nosh-up; menu is currently too limited (and not very vegan-friendly) for a large group.

Incidentally, for anybody curious about trying to cook their own Mexican food, this book has a lot of the vegetarian recipes I was talking about. It's not exclusively vegetarian but there are plenty of veg-only Mexican cookbooks out there.

Argh, now I'm hungry again, just thinking of all the choices at those two restaurants.

  • OK, after some discussion with Oliver, I'm nominating Santo as it looks as if it has a slight edge in terms of Vegan-friendliness (I've also checked with them for no-nos like cooking beans in pork fat). So now we just come down to a date. If we were to keep it monthly, that could mean the week of 24th October. How does that suit people?

  • Thanks for the heads up on Brixton Mexican goodness.

    Nice.

  • Thanks for the groundwork Bruce. Santo sounds Damn fine to me.

  • Always up for Mexican food.

  • OK, just going to check my calendar and then nominate a date in that week.

  • Excellent.
