  • edscoble, you having a laugh?

    :D

  • never been out of the shop bike

  • Yes, yes I am.

Need to pick up another 'cross rear tyres though.

  • m.f. I've stolen that pic to use on my laptop. Cheers.

  • youre welcome, there happened to be good light for a moment,
a good photographer would have got a telephoto shot of pure win.

  • Here's my winter bike.
Just put it together yesterday, and took it out for a test run today.
Runs great, nice and comfy and very practical. But not a pretty sight.

  • What's the deal with the Surly Pugsley folks, complete bike is still on their website but can't find it for sale anywhere! Failing that what kind of alternatives are there that will take a 4" tyre? I was thinking maybe some kind of rigid dirt jump bike? Moots Snoots or a Singular would be nice but I was thinking something not overly expensive and complete.

  • Brixton Cycles are a Surly dealer. Also, I got a couple Google Shopping results for complete bikes.

  • I was browsing for frame sets though so didn't check out the completes.

  • Did you lean perchance?

    Didn't have that chance.
There were those strange icy grooves. It was like riding a tram.

  • Best winter bike I have had.*

    Probably only too...

  • Hah!

Nicely done, sending reps via first class.

    edit - too many reps.

    I beg to differ--beautiful bike.

  • I agree, Oliver. It's a corker.

  • The winter:

    The bike:

  • I like it. Are they actual spikes?

  • They look like Schwalbe Ice Spikers to me. Very harcore.

Love the bike. Reminds me of mine, function-wise TBH.

If you like drops on your commuter, then its nice to have drops in the winter too. Even if you do raise them slightly. Only problem is finding a set-up, that allows you to shift with thick gloves (or mittens/lobster gloves), and works with a more suitable MTN drivetrain. Bar end shifters do this brilliantly, while being nice and robust. Vee brakes are a solid chioce too. Cheap, predictible, and easy to set-up.

Nice set-up. I actually like the look of it too.

I agree too, great bike, looks very practical.

  • Conti spike claw 240 front and back.

Frame is Marin Muirwood 1992 (or so), got it for free from my wife's cousin.
Rattle can black with the original neon yellow surfacing here and there.

Nitto randonneur bars, original Marin steel stem, Coyote stem raiser, black Fizik tape.

Tektro v-drop levers, el-cheapo Shimano vees.

Dia-compe ratchet friction crap bar-end shifters; back lever shimano 8-speed index from 1989 pug running friction mode, cause the Dia-compe IS CRAP.

Original Shimano biospace rings (feel funny). Clas Ohlson big platform pedals with spikes.

    Leading brand plastic mudguards.

Shimano Nexus hub dyno in Rigida wheel. BM Lyt front led light. BM back led light. Both with standlight.

Kalloy 40cm post (sky high). Late 80's plastic saddle, redone with cork "gel-pads" and the original Marin saddle skin and duct tape.

Back wheel, rear rack and frame lock are original parts.

    It's a cheap bike.

  • Love the bike. Reminds me of mine, function-wise TBH.

You know, when I saw your bike I thought: "That's like my bike, only cleaner looking". Maybe it's the new Nordic drop bar winter bike style.

If you like drops on your commuter, then its nice to have drops in the winter too. Even if you do raise them slightly.

I like drops on everything. Not only are they the most comfy, but they also say: "This is a fun, real bicycle, let's hit the road."

  • Especially the randos bar, they're super comfortable and I'll agree, drop on everything.

    Jacquie Phelan won many races on her mtb with drop bar and brake hood;

If some of you don't know who's Jacquie, google her, she's a hero.

  • Ed. Check out this thread on MTBR.com dedicated to drop bars on MTN bikes.
