  • Just caught up with this, I cannot believe that a supposedly intelligent person is holding up the example of one deserving person being given an MBE as to why the monarchy is a good thing. The honours system is historically unbelievably corrupt, more often than not the people who are recognised by it are odious cunts who are interested in nothing that does not lining their pockets.

  • I like America very much, and Americans make truer friends than almost anybody else. But a look at their two main parties shows that they don't generally understand politics. In fact to them, a Liberal, is nearly a Marxist. I don't think they'd mind a monarchy........if it could have started years ago with the Kennedys. They just hasn't thought it through.

Your first sentence above is spectacular for its broad ranging simplicity and simply wrong One of the greatest things about America is its diversity and the consequential inability to generalise about Amerricans.

  • You can, but you went beyond discussion and in your own word it's an argument.

That you then turned personal and made attacks on individuals is why lots of reasonable people are now turning on you. You veil threats and stomp your feet, it comes across as both threatening and childish. A bully to anyone who doesn't share your views.

The fundamental problem is similar to that of religion, if you grow up accepting something and being told things by those around you, then you may not ever question it rigorously. It becomes more of a faith based set of beliefs rather than a reasoned one. Then, when others question your views you find yourself lacking the answers and choose to get personal with those who are asking the questions.

It's fine to have faith based beliefs. Just don't try and then argue in a reasoned debate based on faith. It's what trips up most religious people too. Logic is a trap for faith, and faith cannot stand on the same ground.

The flipside to that is that faith is a trap for logical people... you could've conceded the faith based element to being a Royalist, and thus infuriated all of those attempting to use reasoning.

You could've done a lot of things. But you chose to make lots of personal attacks.

    Veil threats.....? Er? What?

VB you would have banned me for that, and you would have been 100% right for doing so. I don't actually know what you're referring to there.

Background-based element to my being a royalist, is certainly true. Not faith based. I can argue politics, but never religion. I leave that to those in the Middle East....they're more experienced in such matters.

Ed, I apologise for overstepping the mark.

Yes, you were right about the tyre thing, and I wasn't. And here, you behaved better than I did. Noted,

It's emotional rather than cogent reasoning

Clive, I lived in America, and went to school there. The largest group of my Facebook friends are those same American friends from years ago. I didn't pass through there. I didn't visit the place. I lived there. And that is my perspective of America, and my American friends. And those friends, are my truest friends. The bonds are stronger than any I've had in Canada, Grenada (except family), and the UK. I can only speak about my own experiences. I can't speak for the experiences of other people. At least in this, maybe you can say i am being fair.

  • Those are statements about individuals and particular groups pf individuals. You cannot categorise whole nations and particularly one as diverse as America.

To do so would be like me saying that all Royalists are small minded twerps. Not all are. Some are misguided.

    That made me smile Bobbo.

I cannot like the monarchy for dishing out one gong. My point is this; that through clever management, with gong-giving, and national visits, one (her Maj), engenders herself, to we peoples that live in the Tropics. Its definitely clever PR, and it works a treat. They always ennoble the sitting Prime Minister, and this further ensures that he/she remains onside, and the trade show that is the monarchy, remains popular. Also, its historic. In the second world war, many Caribbean people went to fight against the enemies of Britain. Though we are not really a part of things geographically, we still somehow feel a (extended) part of the UK, and as such, view the monarchy, as ours. PMs are very temporary. Once out of office, no-one cares about them.

Yes. It has always been very corrupt, especially at the top.

No-one would mind you saying that; not least, me. Its funny. It could be true. And maybe not.

  • Gaggle,..........

    Quoted for Object.

Thats why I didn't see the harm in saying Andypandy. You may also recall that I called BMMF, Bumfluff, many a time, and not once did he complain about it. He's cleanshaven, and youthful(ish), so what would be the big problem?

  • I dot really have an issue with the Queen herself. She always gets a round in, tells the filthiest jokes and isn't afraid to make her point.

But her offspring really do wind me up.

Don't get me started on "the establishment": the hangers on, the real leeches in this arrangement. They're the only people who're seriously interested in keeping the concept of monarchy alive and kicking in this country because without it there would be thousands more unemployed and unemployable people.

As long as Charles doesn't get crowned King, then the world remains wonderful.

    I largely agree with this.

  • Wow, just saw people with tents looking for a spot on Chelsea Embankment.

Lots of pretty boats and bunting on show - and sheep pens!

  • Just when you thought this thread could not get any less impressive.

  • So we are celebrating the 35th anniversary of the jubilee Line and a tube ride is not part of the festivities. A pity given that the ool biddy would get free tube rides as an 86 year old and the savings would be appropriate given the current austerity policies of "her" government.

  • Still 17 trillion.............any advances?

  • That have been covered already, don't think it's 17 trillion, but worth a lots? defintely (estates).

  • My mother received an MBE, though it was a fitting tribute to the work she had done it did not buy my loyalty to the sovereign.

  • My grandma has an OBE

  • So my boarding school's headmaster.

17 trillion is based on the theory that she owns massive swathes of Canada and a few other territories.

I think she'd find she doesn't, if she ever tries to assert it.
