  • I got my letter rejected, on the grounds that 'nearly identical' letters had been received. I expect the point has been made at this juncture.

  • Another Tory has responded saying she has already signed.

I thought tories stood for motorists. Perhaps the advent of mamils has persuaded them that cyclists need attention as well.

This was mine. It is worth customising a little.

Dear Sarah Ludford, Charles Tannock, Mary Honeyball, Marina Yannakoudakis, Claude Moraes, Gerard Batten, Syed Kamall and Jean Lambert,

As a Londoner and a cyclist I fell very strongly that we need to have more people cycling in London. The alternative transport infrastructure cannot cope and cycling is the environmentally, congestion solving and health promoting necessary way for people to move around our city.

Sadly cycling can be dangerous. It need not be.

Two years ago, a lively and vibrant young woman, Eilidh Cairnas was slaughtered on our streets in the prime of her life by a lorry. A lorry that had no place in the busy streets of our city or any city during rush hour or probably at all.

What can you do? What must you do if you actually care about the city that you represent?

    Sign the declaration.

A small step for you to take but a step that could save many many lives.

    Yours sincerely,

  • Already had one response.

Thank you for your email asking Sharon Bowles MEP to sign Written
Declaration 81, on heavy goods vehicle collisions.

Sharon has signed the written declaration.

If more than 369 MEPs sign the Declaration by 17th February, the
European Commission will have to consider this in future legislation. We
sincerely hope this will be the case.

Thank you once again for contacting us.

    Yours sincerely,

    Ashley Dorrington
    Constituency Office Manager

Ah, thanks. I didn't read the instructions properly. Now amended.

  • Letters sent to Councillors, MP's and MEP's, also posted a thread on YACF forum too.

  • A reponse from one MEP

    Dear Mr O',

    Thank you for your email.

I agree that this is a serious and pressing issue but one that should be addressed only by democratic national parliaments.

I have not signed the Written Declaration because I was elected on the basis of advocating Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union; the European Union is undemocratic and indeed anti-democratic. Therefore on a point of principle I never sign Written Declarations where they call for more EU legislation. I would like to emphasise that Written Declarations have no legislative effect.

I always vote against EU legislation, believing that the governance of countries should be by their accountable and directly elected governments. It would therefore be inconsistent to sign a Written Declaration calling for further EU legislation. Please see the attached copy of my Personal Declaration that states the basis on which I hold my seat in the European Parliament.

I appreciate that you may be disappointed by my response but I hope you will appreciate that I am maintaining a consistent stance for those who elected me on the principles on which I stood.

    Yours sincerely,

    Gerard Batten MEP
    UKIP London

    and my reply to him:

    Dear Mr Batten

Thank you for your e-mail. Your position is both nonsensical and untenable. You place your supposed principles above people's lives and deprive us of a voice where a voice is needed.

You have, however, cleared up in my mind any doubts that I may have had about you and your party. Please rest assured that I shall not vote for either in the future.

    Yours

  • A reponse from one MEP

    and my reply to him:

How can UKIP have a MEP ? That doesnt make any sense at all !!

Anyway, I have emailed all of my councilors, mps and meps this morning. Only automated replies so far......

I really really hope something happens.....

  • done

  • Just a thought about this, it looks to me like most of the London MEPs have signed (or at least those who are going to have)

I used my parents address in Cornwall to write to the South West MEPs instead. If we can spread the message out a little to MEPs who haven't been written to yet, instead of spamming those who have signed already that would be really useful.

Here's the list of those who have signed nationally so far:

    http://www.eilidhcairns.com/campaign/mep-response/

Just a thought. Well done everyone for getting involved, lets hope this is successful!

  • done and ill be using my family in irelands details to email their MEP's too. as markbikeslondon and VB in his email suggested this needs to spread out all over europe so if you are a member of any european forums, or have relatives in europe it is well worth tapping them up to do the same with their local MEPs.

  • Another Tory has responded saying she has already signed.

I thought tories stood for motorists. Perhaps the advent of mamils has persuaded them that cyclists need attention as well.

It's really not a party political issue, Clive, and we should stress that at all times. Even if the Conservative party 'stood for motorists', it wouldn't follow from that that they wanted to see people killed on the streets, which no decent person wants to see. It is quite wrong to be prejudiced against Conservative politicians on this. Let's make sure that we get this to be accepted as an issue for all parties and across parties, so that they work together to achieve improvement. Partisan politics has no place here.

  • done. hope it helps.

  • According to one of my mates Harriet Wolfe has signed too. Did we have her already? Am loosing track.

  • Just an idea I just thought of, you know, kind of like airplane pushers.

  • done.

  • Done.

  • Couldn't find this info anywhere, so hope it helps someone decide who to write to.

Comparing the list of MEPs who've responded on http://www.eilidhcairns.com/campaign/mep-response/ to the total list of MEPs available at http://www.europarl.org.uk/section/your-meps/your-meps,** still missing responses from**:

Northern Ireland (no info on campaign website, so guessing all three of them):
    Bairbre de Brún
    Diane Dodds
    James Nicholson

  • Note that doesn't include the four who've responded saying no. Nirj Deva (south east) is the only one who appears to have refused whilst not being a member of UKIP

  • Thanks so much for doing the RobW.
Seems all the more important after the death of Dan in Dalston last night. RIP.

  • Dr. Charles Tannock MEP from London has also now signed.

  • I have sent out the emails to everyone on the list for the south east.

  • How embarrassing. A Tory has responded to me as follows:

I wrote to the seven MEPs I could, received the same response from the same one.

    Edit, + Jean Lambert MEP

         + Ms Jacqueline Foster MEP
         + Baroness Sarah Ludford
         + Charles Tannock
         + Claude Moraes

  • Done. I also got a very polite response from Syed Kamall (who knew Tories were so pro-bike?). It seems like all the London MEPs signed it, other than the moron from UKIP.

This is a really important campaign, well done to those organising it.
