  • I saw this thread and was like "fuck, 12 pages discussing gang attack on bikes down the road I ride through twice a day!"

Than I read the last 4 pages.

I've never even felt the slight bit uneasy cycling through that area. In fact the roads up to Essex road are beautiful. The two guys with the maserati's seem happy with parking their cars on the street. I really don't see it as being any worse than the rest of london.

That said my two neighbours in the same building got robbed 4 times between them in 3 months. Twice with weapons and while they were in the house. Their windows open to a secluded garden and crackheads made hay. Both have got bars on the windows now. The police who came delighted in telling me that Hackney had the highest number of gangs for any area of britain. 21 recognised gangs and that we lived on the border of 4 gangs territories. Cheers lads.

Still just walked home from Dalston without the slightest bit of fear. And didn't fear when I lived on Shacklewell Lane either. A place that people used to say "oh god, you live there? Do you ever feel safe?" of course I did.

  • I like N1.

  • Is there NE1 out there?

  • I'm just waiting for Deptford's gentrification to accelerate. Yes, there are bars and cafes opening but its still a really nice cultural blend.

When the Deptford Project opened they banged on about providing services for the community but for the life of me can't understand why they think the average SE8er reads the Times (thats where they advertise their events). Can't help but think locals don't want to pay £10 for a fryup in a train carriage either. (Lovely fryup though it is).

Terry the discount store owner next door to the Deptford Project has never been invited to one of their events. He laughs about it being called a community project which is nice. Would be easy to be grumpy about it.

Don't get me wrong, I go to the new bars and restaurants and I'm glad that I have them in my area but its still sad when the community you know, love and grew up in starts filling up with tossers who at least on the surface appear to be concerned more about what they're wearing than helping a neighbour out.

EDIT: As long as the Albany Centre is still going, there will be a genuine community centre in the area.

Dan, you are genuinely the nicest guy I have ever met, all the best to you my friend!

  • Actually, my bitter N1 hatred comes from the day one of the telephonists managed to mix up Angel Mews and Anchor Mews (Or something along those lines). Which are not the nearest N1 destinations to each other. Cue much waiting time and "but Im outside now".."well, the client cant see you".. I think it was Martin that had to sort that one out.

I worked on Angel Mews (N1) for over six years John! No courier deliveries ever get made there AFAIK, although they do to the offices either side (12/14 Pentonville Road).

Interestingly (or not) Angel Mews N1 is not on any online maps I can find, although it is in my A-Z. Angel Mews E1 is on everything, which is silly because it's just a 'gated community', it's not even a road.

  • @Dan/Jim - I don't think anyone wants to pay £10 for a fry up. Do they? At least £5 too much...

  • The Deptford Project allowed a bloke to start making his own bicycle under a railway arches, so it must be somethin' after all...

  • met that guy. Really like what he's producing.

  • @Fox, Depends if the fryup comes with complimentary hot waitress, I'm guessing not, so yeah that is too much, but more like £7.10 too much

  • I do not like ndubz

  • I like Tulisa from ndubz
