  • Having just read Kristian's post, i think i'll hold the group up if i come. 16-17mph average would be my rolling speed for this distance.

  • I'll go with whatever but I'll admit I'm not particularly keen on going balls-out. I'd like to enjoy the ride, the scenery and I'd like to do it fixed. If we're going to reside in the pain cave for 24hours then gears it'll be.

  • i piss on 100+ mile rides. i did 130 in july then went to an all night warehouse party and did a bunch of substances, danced until 7am and went home with a lady midget. true story.
i can do these things because my dna code reads h.t.f.u and i'm awesome.

Stop stealing annecdotes from my blog.

  • 22mph seems really fast.. when I did lake vlattern we averaged 16. Personally I don't think I could do 22 but if someone leaves me a GPS I'll come along with the less speedy bunch. I do fancy a good 100miles.

  • @ braker, wools and laner - happy to travel w you at the 16 or so mph with less an emphasis on FAST and more on enjoy.

22mph is fast, but you have chosen the top end of my estimate :-) I was just going by our last jaunt to Dover which was a nice swift pace.

shit, thought by changing one detail you wouldnt notice my plaigerism.

I'm going to see how things pan out on this thread over the next couple of days. Would be awesome to do it in a large group (for this sort of ride that is) but understand that some peeps have different objectives and restrictions on time. This'll be my first L2P and, as I've got plenty of holiday left over, I'm in no rush. So, for me, it's all about the ride. :)

I would prefere this. Keeping up with people would be the ideal, but in case this is not possible, nice to have a group to go at our own pace.
Really keen to do this so i can be in paris for my birthday!

  • so long as we have a garmain with kristians route on it I'm happy enough. (n.b. i do not own a garmin)

but I've met you K,. and find it easily believable that you could do this pace the whole way!! :)

Me, I know i can do the distance, but doubt I'll do it in warp speed.

  • I'm pretty keen on joining in with this ride (if thats okay with the rest) - some apprehensions about the speed though, I'd be riding a touring bike (by touring I mean touring themed bike, its a hybrid with drop bars) and would be much nearer the 16mph mark (nearer 16mph in that an average of 22mph would kill me). The idea of enjoying the ride and taking my time (within reason) seems quite appealing. I'll try and get to this North drinks thing if it's being discussed then!

I'd be coming back Sunday on the Eurostar also... thats assuming I can get a space for the bike.

  • To maintain a decent pace people need to know how to minimise their energy expenditure, hold a wheel and take the most advantage of the person in front. Otherwise if the group keeps splintering everyone will tire much quicker.

  • I would'nt key in on my 22mph, it was a guess and the top end at that. From my 150km ride on Saturday I think we were going at 24-32kph.27 being average on the non hilly bits I reckon...

  • ^yup, saturday was a chilled pace and one we need to get used to sticking to for PBP.

just to reiterate - kristian has done this ride twice before so i'm inclined to listen to his his account of what to expect.

Ahh... Having said that I rekon this is going to be much more pleasant than previous attempts, being shorter and hopefully less hilly :-)

BTW: Sophie and I will be at the Flask@highgate this evening from 5:30 ish....

  • I can't make tonight but defo keep me in the loop.

Sophie is ill... slacker :-) So I will be on my tod at the flask... I'll be wearing a wooly jumper.

Just to re-iterate.... The more the merrier on this ride, no one will be left behind! If a split is wanted that can happen... Play it by ear I say.

    Roll on beer'o'clock....

  • no can beer tonight (well no can beer full stop)

on the paris brest paris thread there is a 120 mile ride proposed for Saturday, so if people wish to come along and test the waters please sign up

  • I'll be testing the waters on the TNRC deluxe. You can cram your pitiful 120mile Saturday morning ride up your cram hole. :)

  • I might be up for this but on current form I'll be in a slower splinter group. A 17mph (avg) is great to aim for, but with stops and possible mechanicals, plus hills it will only be comfortable slower than that. I wouldn't need a Garmin if I could see the route but would be able to navigate without one, whether UK or France.

Bike carriage on the Eurostar is still a bit iffy--four per train and costs 20 quid extra. I also think the Paris trains are booked up quite a long time in advance? (I take the Eurostar to Brussels quite often and those trains are always quite empty, whereas the Paris ones are generally packed.) I suspect getting back might be the biggest obstacle for me, but riding back could be an option after a day in Paris. It would take a lot longer, though.

You don't fancy the over-priced trip to the pain cave of the North, then. I don't blame you. ;)

Seems cheap enough to me, and not pain cave:

I think this trip to the pain cave of the North will have to wait if I plan on doing the TNRC next week. :) SW sounds like a goer though! I'll PM ya.
