its a hard thing to follow an experienced courier around in London. When you first start the controller will know your new to the job ,so wont push you as much, then gradually give you more work as your fitness improves and you learn your way around more and more,(its not just street knowledge ,but where post rooms are etc). And as Will said the money isnnt what it used to be.But i cant knock it i was a courier for a long time cos i enjoyed it :)

it's a reasonable request if you ask me, researching a job before applying is a good idea and I'm sure a day of shadowing would actually be very enlightening. I reckon you'd find someone willing to help if you rang round.

If you rang round who? If you ring up a courier company with that request you will be lucky if all you hear is laughter. It is not a good idea. But then, it's your area of expertise, not mine.

However if any new members would like to see if posting on this forum is for them, Im sure Will would be more than happy to let you come around to his place one evening for a cup of roobois tea, a few Billy Brag records and a few tips on the finer...

I'm working on the premise that the op is either at school or recently left. And it's not going to do any harm to give it try.
You're right I know nothing about being a courier but do have experience looking for work placements for young people so thought I'd offer some general advice.

Will is right to tell it how it is, but I suppose there is respect due to the OP for at least asking. Sure, nomatter what the job or career, we all had to start somewhere and relied on others to cut us a bit of slack in terms of understanding what is involved?

CV: That's the point; you don't know what you are talking about and if he followed your advice then it might well do him some harm. Very few controllers would look favourably on anyone who made that kind of request. It would lessen his chances of getting a job.
I can't see why if someone comes on here asking advice about becoming a courier anyone who is not, or has never been, a courier or a controller would bother to give advice. The OP certainly did the right thing by asking, and I hope he will do the right thing by taking the informed advice he has been given. He is just lucky he did not ask on MT. -

I come on here for hair styling tips. Don't you?

Balki is my source of informed advice on that subject.

Cheapskate. What will the beauty salons do if cyclist resort to such DIY initiatives? -

Is anyone here a fireman? Was hoping to tag along, put out a fire or two, hold the ladder, etc. Won't get in the way though!!

Ha ha. And one of those people was me. Now I don't know what to think. I was sniffing four or five lines of Lemsip a day though back then.
Good man. :-)
