  • I agree with Andyp - Evans and Gilbert had to attack repeatedly to try and shake off the sprinters. If Evans wasn't prepared to do the work dragging Kolobnev and Moerenhouts (i think?) up to Gilbert he might as well have just sat up for the rest of the day and given up his jersey quietly. So he didn't win... he wouldn't have won if he hadn't chased, either. Better to have a crack at it. The guy can't catch a break from some people - he's either a wheel sucker or too aggressive - pick your favourite criticism.

The Italians had the same idea and were aggressive at various times. Good ideas. Gilbert wasn't far off succeeding, he just didn't quite have the legs at the finish, but his gamble wasn't far off succeeding.

  • Good race. Thor had it too easy but well done to him. Davis with a bronze is a nice enough result.

Up from Dorset, you idiots can't even run a Tour of Britain without getting rider protests because of a dangerous lack of organisation. I'm sure if it was drizzling it would have looked more favourable to you. 'No one capable of taking the win'.. who was the 2009 world champion? Who came in 3rd? When was the last time England won a world road champs? Hahaha

  • Hushovd played it perfectly. The Norwegians, like the Brits, only had a team of three, but had EBH in the dangerous break meaning Hushovd could follow the wheels in the chasing group, then he only showed his nose in the final 100 metres. A quality win.

Evans has really gone up in my estimation in the past year, he's been a top quality world champion and showed us today that he wasn't giving up the jersey without a fight. What's the Aussie for chapeau, fair dinkum?

@hippy - we race as GB so the answer to your question is 2008 I think you'll find.

  • Great race, Hushovd kisses the Cervelo at the finish... lol

  • Evans has really gone up in my estimation in the past year, he's been a top quality world champion and showed us today that he wasn't giving up the jersey without a fight. What's the Aussie for chapeau, fair dinkum?

I agree, it's been a great year for Evans. What he has achieved is quite something, considering the strength of the BMC team supporting him.

  • England won a world road champs? Hahaha

England have never won anything every australian knows this.

  • Great finish - epic fail from the commentary team though!

Even my missus was asking "why are they still talking like Gilbert is in the lead?"

  • yeah it's a terrible place... beaches, parks, countryside... horrible.

Yeah, we got those too. On the evidence, ours look a lot nicer.

  • Their tactics were spot on, neither had any chance in a bunch sprint so they worked hard to try and prevent that from happening, sadly to no avail.

'Spot on' tactics don't get 3rd places.

Australia failed big: there were hundreds of them (GB had 3 riders, as had Norway, who won). They got a guy in every break, they had one in the main bunch, who was well placed for the sprint and yet the best they got was third. Losers.

  • I was talking about Evans' and Gilbert's tactics specifically, as well you know.

You're clearly looking for a rise on the Aussie front, as a non-Aussie you'll not get that from me, but if you think the Aussies are 'losers' who 'failed big' I'd love to hear your verdict on the Dutch, Spanish and Italians.

  • Also, any view on how Team GB did tactically?

  • Never stood a chance. 3 british riders, riding for easily the best sprinter in the world right now. He'd have been marked out of existence. I thought his best hope would've been to persuade his colombia team mates to work for him but, for whatever reason, this did not come to pass.

In fairness, by the time I started watching Cav was on the plane home. I've no idea why he pulled out. Italians, like the ozzy's, had a good hand but blew it.

I was shouting loud for Gilbert but the hill was too far from the finish to be of any use. Bad course design. See last year's race for an example of how to do it properly.

  • What category race license do you hold up from dorset?

  • so i guess the Germans, Belgians, Spanish, Italians, Dutch, French and Americans should all just give up then? they all had big teams full of stars, using various tactics, and didn't win anything.

    yeah, right.

  • @hippy - we race as GB so the answer to your question is 2008 I think you'll find.

I know where you get your good cyclists. I didn't ask about other countries. I asked about England.

  • England have never won anything every Australian knows this.

    The correct answer.

  • Yeah, we got those too. On the evidence, ours look a lot nicer.

'Knowing what a beach should look like' fail.

  • 'Spot on' tactics don't get 3rd places.

Australia won the U23 and podiumed the Mens.

Team GB, "fastest sprinter in the world". Failed. Losers.

  • You're clearly looking for a rise on the Aussie front

I was out. I'm back now so good to go. Sorry for the delay.

  • No worries - don't hold back.

  • Never stood a chance. 3 british riders, riding for easily the best sprinter in the world right now. He'd have been marked out of existence.

Marked? He's a sprinter you knobend. What's he gonna do, change his tactic and start a break? Maybe in the last 5k.. but he wasn't in the last 5k now was he? I think you misunderstand cycle racing. Better luck next time eh?

  • No worries - don't hold back.

Thanks. I know you won't mind.
Just as long as I'm not buying Rob a fucking hamburger in 2 years I'm ok with anything your lot do ;)

  • What the hell is this thread about?

^you will be buying me two cheeseburgers with extra bacon, Cobber.

  • Not a chance. Your team are either too old or have decided road racing pays better.
Our team will be almost totally fresh meat and are already breaking world records.

and I have to say those Herne Hill things are making it really hard to tell who's posting what now

  • Our team will be almost totally fresh meat and are already breaking world records.

They'll burn out or get caught on EPO.

Everybody knows that Aussies have a right strop if they don't win - that's why every let Cadel Evans win last year. After a long year of him losing they couldn't stomach another hissy fit from the Grumpy Goblin.

He's probably back in Oz right now, stabbing a puppy with a ballpoint pen to vent his anger.
