Kirth, order some from Prendas http://www.prendas.co.uk/list.asp?ID=5&typ=typ
they are good and cheep and the santini bibs are awesome.
The £40-odd bibs I got from Shutt last year, weren't cutting the mustard over 100km, so I splashed out on the Santini Edge from Prendas, more because I have come to trust them, than any particular recommendation for the shorts.Awesomely comfortable and the longer leg is nice too. The pad is just amazing!

im looking to get into some lycras for some weekend rides now that i have a fully fledged road bike, aiming to do stage 2 of Le Tour too, so am in need of some bibs (and other lycra)
with this colder weather, do most road cyclists wear the full bib trouser? or is it going to be ok to wear the bib shorts with layers on the top?
im new to this lycra malarky, but keen to get it right! as for decent brands and models, wanting something decent but im no pro.......Castelli are good? Capo? DHB seem to be highly rated, and the Santini above too, anything else I should look at? Gore do good quality bibs?
cheers in advance!

Bib shorts should be fine with knee warmers, you can then remove the warmers when the weather gets, er, warmer.

Nalini / Santini are good.
I hardly ever wear tights - much prefer bibs and legwarmers.

Rapha, assos, skinz bibshorts are all good
Get a pair of bibshorts and then a set of bib tights to go over the top, or if you run warm then knee warmers.

I'd go for DHB Aeron Pro and Nanoflex leg warmers - layers are better and easier to remove and the Nanoflex ones are by all accounts the business.
I have Assos and Rapha bibs and they're great but it's a lot of cash to spend first time round.

Those Santini I linked to above are now being worn by three of my friends, who are all equally enthusiastic.
I prefer shorts plus unpadded tights to padded tights on their own: your gooch is in the breeze and a chilly willy is no fun at all.
Women's tights are brilliant when it gets really cold: an extra layer with minimal bulk. Footless if you prefer, but I appreciate the extra insulation for my toes, even with decent socks and proper Winter boots.

awesome, thanks for the replies, i was going to ask a stupid question but SS has answered it (about unpadded tights), is that the difference between 'tights' and 'knickers' or am i missing something else?
Think knee warmers or unpadded tights are the way forward for me, my girlfriend is already dubious about lycra already, so will avoid the 'womens tights' discussion for now, ha

you need to be wearing bib shorts for knee warmers to stay up (they are worn under the bishorts which help keep them in place)

Definitely invest in some thermal bib shorts, thermal knee warmers, and thermal leg warmers.
That way you get load of flexibility of set-up.
A double layer over the thighs were needed, while have a single layer around flex points (hips and knees). So more comfort.
Plus you can dial in the length.
Tights are often full length, and knickers a 3/4 length.

My PBK knee warmers have a silicone gripper at the top. Gives you a free bikini wax on long rides.
I have fallen in love with my Rapha merino wool knee warmers. They pack a touch smaller, and seem to offer a braoder comfort zone. I usually find merino bits less wind proof than brushed lycra. But doesnt seem to bother me with the Rapha arm and knee warmers. Bit curious to how long they retain shape.

Have the on-one merino knee warmers and they are ace. I'd get them before thermal shorts, as you might find that you don't actually need them (I don't). Ridden in some horrid weather and they are great, even when wet

my rapha ones have done very well over 2 seasons, kept shape and not worn too badly at all, especially as they have been worn under trousers when I have been teaching outdoors

I get cold hip bones (getting on a bit). Hence the thermal shorts. Plus the ambiant temps up here will be a few degrees less than the UK. So they are probably more useful.
I have 2 unused PX merino jerseys, and a barely used On-one merino beanie. Horrible fit with both. So I steered clear.

Good to know.

I managed to pick up 2 pairs of Rapha Proteam bibs at the weekends Sample Sale, would definately recommend them as a quality pair of bibs(worth £170 probably not, maybe nearer £100). I have been using http://www.cycle-clothes.co.uk/shorts/?gender=mens&type=road-cycling for the past two years and they have done the job.

Rapha bibs are one of the few things I do think are worth the ca$h
At 40quid they were a ridic bargain

Couldnt believe the prices at the sale, im £345 lighter but I've enough quality kit to last a fair few years. Just slightly frustrating looking at the ebay warriors making a killing at the expense of other cyclists!

Really?
Rapha charge more for the same stuff 365...

I only have the thermal Pro teams at the moment. But the fit and pad are spot on in my opinion. So I'll be getting some standard pro teams asap.
Craxy expensive to buy from Norway. So I'm in the hands of the Ebay sellers. Have to say I've let dozens go. I blame the buyers as much as the sellers. Paying 95% of retail for something off Ebay???

I have just placed an order for these http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-vaeon-roubaix-padded-34-bib-tight/
I think I am going against some of the advice here, but I will point to Berlin 'sunny' weather/my cheapness. If it gets hot maybe I will get bib shorts or something.
Now I just have to finally get forks for my road bike, find the 'cartman' jersey my friend bought me as a joke and I can be a full on MAMIL on the mean streets of Pankow.

Gosh such a long time ago that I started this thread, so many shorts later!
I now have this to offer:
Mavic: nice moulded pad with increased density on the sit bones but the lettering peels off, they look tatty now.
Santini: pad is a bit basic but does the job, but the elastic holding the legs is a bit sus and looks tatty now.
Castelli: comfy pad, great fit and worth the additional cost.
Rapha: like most rapha stuff, bit meh but looks nice.
Assos: probably worth the money, but I've never tried them.

Looking to buy some bibs as the my current dhb basic jobbies aren't working for longer rides. It could be that they aren't quite the right size and the pad seems to move about a bit.
Can anybody recommend something at around 50-60 quid.
I was going to try some howies bibshorts which seem to have favourable reviews, but I am keen to hear suggestions.
