  • Determinate varieties (e.g. Bush types) don't need the 'non fruiting stems' suckers removing.
Indeterminate varieties ( e.g. Vine types ) usually need the suckers pinching out so that energy isn't wasted.

  • I put Marigolds all over my allotment. Great splash of colour and they flower for donkeys.

  • Donkeys in your allotment. Lucky you ;)

  • Donkeys love flowers. They have a tendency to munch them though :/

  • Every time I try marigolds they mildew

  • +1 to the right clematis.

My folks have had one on the shades north side of the garden.

We have a Malvern Rose on both the shaded and sunny end of the garden. It still grew in the shade (obvs not as well).

  • Any large-flowering hybrid does ok in shade, for winter colour Freckles is good.

  • Is it too late to be planting wildflowers? I was reading about the pro-bee ban on certain insecticides and want to do a bit.
I have no access to S-facing planting though.

  • Comfrey Boking 14

  • Planters ready for planting tomorrow...

  • You are Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstal AICMFP

  • Well he does live about 10 miles away...

  • One Jumbo pumpkin seed per planter?

  • There is an idea... already have one elsewhere with all the herbs in, think these are going to be for summer veg.

Really cheap way to make planters, these are crates that roof slates come in, so if you can find a roofing company nearby they might let you have some... they do weigh a tonne though, helps to have a telehandler to move them about and load them...

I need a telehandler in my life. I may take up gardening now.

  • Yeah I garden with a tractor, telehandler and 3.5 tonne digger, finesse is not my strong point..l

  • When you need tools that big it's landscaping

  • Capability Sam

  • Maybe we need a Show us your tractor thread? :-)

  • Anyone else? @dancing james definitely has a shiny one compared to my old monster...

  • This is going to be a great mine is bigger than yours contest!

  • I'm more likely to win a mine is older and rustier than yours contest....

  • I scarified my grass the other day but it looks very much the worse for wear albeit most of the moss is gone..

It's threadbare and there's baldy bits. How do I get it back?

  • It will grow back but as you have moss, you've most likely got drainage issues so make lots of holes with a fork and add sand, if you want to add some more seed mix this with the sand and brush into the area, I would also do this every Sept, you can buy a tool that makes the holes I've used both and a fork works just as good.
