rik, seriously, the few voices of complaint (i'm sorry if thats you or you or you) are still a few, a minority, surely? so surely the majority are cool with it all?
and was jono's tourney in the same vein as all others in terms of rules and regs? this one, being different has rocked a few boats. a few boats only. that's how it seems to me.

    polo love.

    blah blah blah
do something, reread the thread/s, and them told me his only me who is complaining
I dont want to quote everyone that has complain

  • i don't hear many voices in complaint this thread tho b. and they're not in unison. they're arguing different rules at best.

  • all the rules gabes?

  • BFF 2010 Experimental Polo 17.10.2010

4th Annual Bicycle Film Festival Open

After a year of intense team tourneys, this years BFF is what Max is calling a mixer. No established teams, probably very few established rules, just a last chance for some (semi-) competitive polo before the winter league really kicks in and things get serious. Honestly, who even cares what the weather is like? Maybe it'll rain again. **Maybe it'll be as awesome as last year. **

    1:no foot down
    2:score with the business end
    3:like for like contact
    4: first to five wins

    few rules

@i read more than that on this thread, and not everyone posted.

  • blah blah blah

I thought matt already counted 5 rik.

  • make it seven on a real count.

  • shall i count all those playing that haven't objected?

  • put the rules here and put your name next to that which you contest. make it clear. make your voice heard or just play the fucken game.

  • dictating to people that they can / can't play with people = not fun.

I have refrained from weighing in on this particular argument for fear of getting hit in the crossfire, but... didn't you dictate exactly who could play with who (and, by implication, who couldn't play with who) at your birthday tournament?

    And wasn't it fun?

  • i'm referring to this tourny and its selective, emilie and i picked all teams and it was fun, but it was also stupid, nobody bought a plane ticket to go.

  • johnH your talking out of your arse. marc live in paris rik in berlin, so 365 days is impossible.

You could play together in Konstanz or Utrecht or any of the other tournaments that happen throughout the year.

I have a lot of respect for you, as one of the best players in London, and have no interest in getting on the wrong side of you, but it seems a bit stupid to me to enter a tournament and then complain about the rules. If you don't like them, don't enter.

Anyway, I'm going to stay out of this discussion now, I'm just going to turn up on the 17th and play, whatever the rules and the teams are.

  • I think the idea of mixing it up for a tournament isn't a bad idea.

However, shuffle goals, making a new mallet (anyone got pipe please?) and struggling to find a team are putting a bit of a dampener on things, I'm sure it'll all work out in the end.

Just came across as a bit "prescribed fun" in the beginning, but hats off to the organisers for actually stepping up.

  • anyone who thinks about playing with someone else in the future ... possibly = established.
    #idiot.

  • the tournament was announced before the rules john.

  • For the record.

The mixer idea is good, I like it as it means I get to play with people who I wouldn't usually.

Rules like the count being 3 2 1 dick move are pointless and silly but don't effect the game. As such I don't care.

Playing for 15 minutes with no goal limit sucks in my opinion. Polo is first to 5 and I would like it to stay that way. However, I have played in tournaments where there is no goal limit, many haven't. As such I'm happy to let it ride for this tournament so that more people can experience it, afterall it's only 1 tournament.

No holding on to the fence to remain upright. This seems like a pointless addition which will be virtually impossible to enforce. But I can't imagine it'll remain in any rule set past this tournament so again I don't care.

Euro Cheater Mallet. This means I'll have to build another mallet but to be honest I'm happy to do so for this tournament. It's not exactly an arduous task.

    This one however;

To score you may put the ball in the goal anyway you like. eg. Shuffle/Shaft/Shot/Scoop/Ball Joint/wheel/header. Anything that crosses the line is a goal (with the exception of the use of hands and feet). This includes a ball stuck in one’s spokes (riding into goal).

This particular rule is bullshit as it changes everything about our game. This is the only thing that I have and will bitch about. Yes it might be amusing for a game at pickup but seriously, people may see polo for the first time at this tournament. Do we really want to portay our sport as a skill-less game?

  • ah shit, i need skills now? fuck! :P

  • Don't worry Matt, you don't need skill to turn up 3 times a year to pickup at downham.

  • the tournament was announced before the rules john.

Hmm, that's unfortunate then. If you team was entered before the rules where announced then I say you should be able to play together.

I agree with most of this, ie happy to let most of the rules ride - however, I am dubious about the scoring method as well, but, on the other hand, we won't know unless we try it at a tournament.

  • Hmm, that's unfortunate then. If you team was entered before the rules where announced then I say you should be able to play together.
No team was registered before the rules were announced.

  • The mixer idea is good, I like it as it means I get to play with people who I wouldn't usually.
Additional, this does not make clear that I believe Marc and Skoota should be able to play together. B's Birthday did not and never will count as a real polo tournament.

  • What's the problem with changing your game for ONE tournament? And is it even going to really change it?

Shuffling the ball into the goal is only really useful when you're directly in front of the goal and are scrambling to get it in, a point when the ball going across the line is often hard to call. Goal ref relies on players to call the shot and that's not ideal when in the heat of the moment some players may not want to call their shuffle a shuffle.

How about removing that issue for ONE tournament. Allowing everything that passes the line means the goal ref's job is easier and keeps the game in play. Besides, when you're used to using the business end, it becomes awkward to not use it and shuffles have much less power behind them making them often ineffective.

More than anything, I see this as a rule that allows lobs (which are more effective because they are fast and fly above the ground, and not to mention they require a lot more skill so those who can can show off) and removes all controversy when the ball passes the line. It passed the line, it is good.

This is ONE tournament. It is not making a mockery out of polo (polo are serious business). It is a day to fuck about and try something new (and that have been tried before by others at different points, so it's not that shocking). Sure there are a couple other rules that are a bit stupid, but this is not league, this is not the Euros, this is not the Worlds. It is ONE tournament.

  • Dear haters,

    Piss off.

    Read the title, "experimental polo".

Brendan, for the love of god, stop going back to the "established teams" crap, as it has been said, Jon got it wrong, you're not allowed to play with anyone you've ever played with before in a tournament or league.

Now, i'm sorry that you've all got your knickers in a twist about the rules, but once again read the title, "experimental", clues in the name! Is allowing shuffles really that bad? (was going to justify it, but adrienne just did it for me)

  • Mrak is making a monkey out of polo (polo are serious business)

    Amen to that.
