No, we don't. You might.

ok. So noone here has ever made a mistake on the road, whether as a ped or on the bike, and this invalidates my argument for being a little more sympathetic to those trying to cross the road?

I was going to Kennington from camberwell this morning and was waiting at the busy junction just before the Oval tube. All of a sudden a cyclist crushed into my back wheel and because it was busy so he had nowhere to go on the road so he then got off him bike, jumped onto the pavement and then walked all the way to the front of the road, got back on his bike and slowly cycled towards to junction box with his front wheel inside the yellow line... why? why? and why?
Why? Because clearly he's a bellend. -

I always stop at zebra crossings if it's safe. If it's not safe and I have to roll through, I apologise. I also always wait when the lights at pedestrian crossings are flashing amber, and wait for everyone to finish crossing. It doesn't cost me anything.
It's always safe to stop, I've never bust through a zebra crossing or a red light in 20 years of daily driving. If you see a crossing coming up ahead then it's your duty as the roaduser to take the necessary precaution to avoid danger to others.
If it's not safe to stop then that's because you are the one at fault.

I'm not talking about busting through, Im talking about when you are a few meters from a zebra, and a ped walking along the pavement decides to turn into the road. Pulling an emergency stop in this situation would be silly. In fact I have done this on occasion and they stare at you like you are mad. I absolutely take your point about red lights though, no excuse.

N, we just walk to a pedestrian crossing instead of being dicks expecting people to let us cross the road like it's our right to do.
Also, Wrongcog wasn't talking about puffin crossings.
You're right - I wasn't. Cheers O'Shane. I was talking about pelican crossings... where you have to make a call on when to pull away relative to pedestrian's progress off the crossing.
I don't jump lights through pedestrian crossings......*
*Unless it's 4am and the dude who pressed the button is loooooong gone.

hand on heart does anyone here always without fail obey the highway code ? I mean as soon as a pedestrian even looks to be about to cross the road you stop for them? even if it means pulling a big fuck off fixie skid?
Always.
If I have to do a big fuck off fixie whip skid, I'm going way too fast under the circumstance to safety slow down.

Don't forget that with zebra crossings not only do you have to give way to pedestrians you are not allowed to overtake other vehicles.

Assuming we're talking about zebra crossings, you're wrong.
.
If you could of been bothered to read part 2 of reg. 25 you would see that it states that a crossing with an refuge or central reservation is treated as separate crossings.
So, you're wrong, I'm right.

Your perception of this is likely to be very different to that of the ped.
Jumping lights when pedestrians are crossing, or are about to cross the road, is intimidating and aggravating. They have right of way. They have the right to cross the road without being hassled. When you jump the lights they have every right to be annoyed at you. It's like someone waiting behind you in a queue breathing down your neck, or pushing past you onto the train. Seriously, chill out. Wait another ten seconds, and people will stop thinking you are a prick.
IMOH our cities should be alot more freindly towards pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians are safer, dont crash into each other, take up less space, dont need huge areas of tarmac. Fast traffic, bikes included, carve up our spaces with dangerous, impassable swathes of noisy impatient arseholes. I bet everyone here has been in a situation where they need to cross a busy road on foot, but noone will stop for them. It's a pain in the ass.
This.
It's amazing how many times- despite stopping right at the cyclist stop line, despite being in a bit of a rush thus riding faster than most, how often I get swamped by bells who have no concept of queuing.
I mostly keep my mouth shut but occasionally I'm still forced to ask,
"Excuse me mate, but if you stop there, where are pedestrians meant to cross?"

No, you are still wrong. The central refuge is irrelevant in the context of the question asked.
The question was
To avoid being called out in future, what's generally accepted pedestrian crossing behavior? A HGV driver yelled at me this morning for going through one while a pedestrian was crossing, but they were still well in the opposite lane.
Am I pissing off pedestrians or is this ok? I'm aware that the law probably says 'stop', but I care more about being safe and courteous. The law states that you must give way to the pedestrian on that crossing.
It does not state that you may not go over the crossing, which I inferred your answer "If there isn't [a central refuge] then you can't." is in response to.
Which is demonstrably wrong.
I'm more than happy for you to demonstrate which piece of legislation state otherwise though.

There's a lot going on the road grabbing my attention. Sometimes I miss zebras until the last moment. Peds also need to understand the highway code that says LOOK first before deciding to cross. Vehicles should only stop if they can come to a safe stop and not pulling big fuckoff skids. You'd be an idiot to step into that path. What fucks me off are the selfish twats that stream past me as I've stopped for a person on a zebra crossing.

If there was a big fucking horse shaped object in front of me, I would like to think that I would notice it, no matter what.

All untrue.
You can't cattle people and not expect them to knock into each other. Look at most spots that have numbers of people walking into the street- you'll usually find that the pavement area isn't fit for purpose i.e. it too small for the number using it.

Something drivers don't realised at all.
Well if you're going to belligerently sit on the left (on the zig zags) you're inviting an overtake.
...and some cyclists.
some?*
I'm sometimes guilty of this esp during heavy/slow moving traffic

If it's a high-sided vehicle in front and I've got folks trying to pass on my left and right I'll sometimes miss it (not bust through but just being aware it's coming up). Sorry

The other day I passed a guy who decided to sit on my wheel. Half a mile later, on the approach to a roundabout he decided to overtake me and because he was now going too fast, and the cars ahead were braking, he had to swerve into my path, almost taking out my front wheel.
I called him out but he just looked at me blankly, then again switched into my (left turning) lane and turned left in front of me. I asked him what he was playing at but got more blank stares.
I turned off later on and he then bellowed some abuse at me. I decided to go after him and give him some advice, and I caught him a bit further down the road, which caught him by surprise, and pointed out the error of his ways. He accepted a telling off and we parted.
Tonight he pulled over next to me at some lights, offered me his hand and apologised quite genuinely. -

I rock up here every so often. Read this thread. Feel really really really guilty for being a 'bad' cyclist. Then I try my very best to stop at every light, every crossing in fact stop for every other road user where-ever possible. I can kinda do it. I even feel quite good about myself. But then inevitably I am in a hurry to get some where and I go back to my old courier ways of riding fast and not really stopping very much at all if I can help it. I find it much more fun to ride this way, more fluid, but its not right is it. I really must try harder. Does Buffalo Bill stop at every traffic light? I bet he does.

Check your hand for bogeys
Ok, fair enough. I stand by not assuming everyone you come across is and 'unthinking idiot' though. We all forget to look sometimes.
