Is it time to start calling out bad cyclists?

  • Haven't looked into this, but I'm pretty sure buses no longer have to stop at red (if it's a pedestrian crossing) or take notice of box junctions.

It must be in a revised version of the highway code somewhere.

lol. So true! Have you noticed any places where this happens a lot?

I've seen it too often on Walworth Road for starters.

  • Nope, the bigger and more unlikely the vehicle the brain says its a figment of your imagination.

^ I'd be interested to read up on this theory. Never heard of it before.

It's not a theory. I spent weeks in hospital after getting hit by a Virgin Pedolino train on Oxford St. Just stood there like an idiot thinking 'that can't be real'.

  • Somebody elses problem field, put forward by Douglas Adams

Had people drive into an Alvis stalwart claimed they did not see it. Ok it was painted in camo colours but really. Also a man in an Audi wedge himself in to a tank on a low loader I was driving. Claimed that there were no lights on it...on a sunny day. But think its the man in a monkey suit and the basket ball thing. Looking in one place and the mind does not accept what they eye is seeing.

It was a mental hospital though.

Did this all happen in the hospital ;)

  • I was under the impression any vehicle inside the zigzags doesn't have to stop or is that just zebra type crossings?

Lynx is describing the invisible gorilla effect. http://www.livescience.com/6727-invisible-gorilla-test-shows-notice.html

If we're concentrating on something in particular, our brains skim over the rest of the details and fill bits in for the other places we're not looking at directly, so it's surprisingly easy to completely fail to notice something really obvious that's right in front of your nose. It's an interesting effect but it's not very flattering about our ability to multitask :/

  • TfL used it for a watch out for motorbikes campaign a few years ago. Was quite good.

Zig-zag lines do mean no stopping - but stopping as in not driving. Stopping and waiting for someone to cross would still count as driving. I'm sure there's a convoluted and dry description somewhere, but that's the general gist.

Zebra crossings don't mean that cars have to stop, but that pedestrians have right of way once they - when pedestrians are on the crossing, cars must stop.

  • lol. So true! Have you noticed any places where this happens a lot?

    Yes, London.

  • No parking or overtaking motorised vehicles on the zigzag lines. Obviously stopping is permitted to wait for lights or people to cross or whatever.

  • i ride my bike on the road like i do my motorbike, and have never had a single issue. i honestly cant think of one, and thats since 2001.

    What?

I'd be interested in hearing where you ride and what you consider an 'issue', considering the stories I hear from motorcycling friends in London.

a fact the drivers round my way love to take advantage of when I'm trying to use the ped crossing just off the high street (as a ped). it's not uncommon for 3 or 4 cars to drive through in quick succession with no sign of slowing until I physically step into the flow of traffic and force them to stop. most of the time they then stop 15m further up the road to turn right across the oncoming traffic lane.

    fucking cunts.

i dont ride in london got to admit, im in brighton but you hear the same stuff about bad drivers. i see bad cyclists everyday when im driving and on my bike - car always get the blame but its almost always the cyclists causing the problem. i can see what theyre doing wrong but theyre just completely oblivious as to how to properly use the road.

like i say, i ride my bike like i do my motorbike and have no problems, i put that down to having been intensively trained to use the road, and not just assuming how its done.

"issue" - talking about on my bicycle, not my motorbike. issues as in never been cut up, had a close call, clipped by anything else, shouted at, beeped at, hit anything, anything hit me, etc. (having said that something will probably happen today...)

a lot of people in this town just have no clue, they ride like children

  • I also ride like I rode my motorbike. It certainly has made me more observant. It still doesn't stop other people thinking "oh it's only a bicycle", "he'll stop"- "I've plenty of time" etc. The sounds of vehicles make people think twice about making a move.

i also ride my bike like a motorbike, i like making rummm-rummm-rummmm noises as i ride along.

Run over a coke/other beverage of your choice can so it gets jammed between the seatstays, that way you can save your voice for skid noises.

  • I raced a procession of bikers on my polo bike once. They were doing one of those Xmas run things dressed as Santas and whatnot and I got caught up in it and joined in the waving and smiling for a mile or 2. I got to the front of the line at some lights and one of them was revving so I sat there pretend revving and rumm-rumm-rumming, he won, but I felt like a winner.

Would rep if my iPhone would let me. Superb.

I often get revved at by impatient cars and bikes (and shirty scooters) so ill frequently make 'RUMMMM-RUMMMM!' noises in return. Strange foreigners, eh?

ride no handed, the fuckers know you are not stopping.

wear headphones so you cannot hear them shout obscenities at you.

play air guitar to emphasise that there are things more important in life than care and attention.

    fart as you pass by.

my wisdom is now imparted, my work here is done.

  • neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • I was under the impression any vehicle inside the zigzags doesn't have to stop or is that just zebra type crossings?

No, does not mean that. It means you just can't park in the zig zags or filter past the penultimate car.

Parking comes with 3 points on your licence.

That was peripheral vision as well. From the side a single light can be lost as its seems not to be moving, and there is no way to judge speed.
