Is it time to start calling out bad cyclists?

  • Thankfully the opinions shared by the cyclist involved aren't shared by the greater cycling community:

    https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/281897/

  • It's a grim story, and reading between the lines it looks like she is in a medically induced coma and if the new user who posted is to be believed things are not good.

That @CharlieFuckingA has shown no remorse is worrying.

  • It's the combination of the lack of compassion and being worried about something that's replaceable which I find utterly deplorable. His attitude paints the picture of an altogether rather odious and immature individual.

  • I have been thinking about the decision to stop, shout or do whatever. Lots imo get this decision wrong taking risks with others and then when/if something does happen they justify what they did with past similar decisions "going ok". It's a similar justification made for blasting past pedestrians while riding a bike or making close passes while driving a car or tailgating of any sort.

I really would invite @CharlieFuckingA to take some time to look at his riding again, right or wrong you can't go back and change it but it would help towards it not be repeated again.

I didn't read the newspaper comments but I'd guess if reading here followed a good slog reading the usual newspaper comments aimed directly at you then you wouldn't exactly be calm and collected. I also noticed waiting hours on end with the police and somewhere was an attempt to contact the hospital. The earlier comments I'd excuse a bit for that(tho not totally). The later comments about your bike and stuff are just nasty and sadly remove any want to excuse the earlier comments. I'd hope like most would be you are a bit beside yourself confused and emotional but you could also be a total tool.

  • Ouch, fingers crossed the pedestrian pulls through okay.

I have had a similar interaction with a ped where she stepped off the pavement and I shouted a warning and swerved away from her but she panicked and ran in to my path, luckily no injuries, so I do empathize with the rider involved.

  • Glad to see your attitude is changing.

    Do you ride brake less?

  • Seriously mate stop...
You're not helping any one with this kind of behavior.

  • I believe my riding had nothing to do with how this situation ended.

It's entirely possible to ride in a manner to prevent this situation from happening again.

Instead of shouting twice, just squeeze the brake and slow down, peds still have priority over you once they're on the road.

  • Give him a break James and Scoble.

  • Is there any need for that?

  • So much this. It's really tasteless, immature and embarrassing.

  • It's only as tasteless, immature and embarrassing as stating that she deserved what happened to her because she was on her phone.

And there's still the small matter of brakeless/non brakeless riding to consider.

  • Trying to drag it out into a public lynching/shaming (with the sense that this is for certain people's entertainment) when there's far more significant and traumatic consequences being felt be people who could quite feasibly stumble into this discussion?

  • Have you seen the name of this thread?

  • God, this is unpleasant. Did @CharlieFuckingA come across as being a dick at first? Yes, but this is a whole other thing now.

  • Do you really think that makes this OK?

  • lotsa people itching for their pitchforks. in here and elsewhere. keep it up boys, you'll get your chance soon enough.

  • It's already public. So far it's really been all about him and whether or not his precious (and indeed replaceable) bike survived and what he considers to be the fact that he wasn't in any way at fault.

If he had time to shout once and for her to register his existence and then to shout again, then he had ample time to brake.

I'm certainly not apportioning blame in any particular direction - we've all had peds step out into the carriageway, but to categorically state that the same thing would've happened time and time again would suggest to me that this particular rider is in dire need of cycle training or an Oyster card.

  • Having recently spent 3 days in hospital/3 months on the sofa after a pedestrian caused an accident in similar circumstances, I can also empathise with the rider. It's a lottery who walks away without injury in these cases and no-one goes out looking for it to happen. I got a lot of support/sympathy from people around me which eased me back to a normal disposition, I hope Charlie and the Ped can get back to normal in the near future.

There will always be an element of doubt regarding your own part in any accident which can lead to a lot of different emotional responses. The knee jerk reactions going on in this and the other thread seem particularly cruel from some contributors, this is after all the friendliest forum on the internet.

b.t.w. Charlie, flowers are not welcome in most hospitals anymore. Apparently they help spread germs, aggravate allergies and create more work for nurses.

  • Can we change the subject?

Somewhat calling myself put but also the woman following me. I pulled into the new advanced start line box thing on St George's circus from Borough Road. With it all being brand new I've ended up next to one of those cycle killer tipper lorries. No worries I think, he can just see me, there will be a cycling headstart and I'll be off before any bother.

Things start going wrong when I notice that it's a mandatory left turn for vehicles and I'm under his front left wheel and then a bus going south jumps the red and comes through the roundabout late, negating any early start.

Because I've been paying attention I can get out and across him, just. The woman following however just breezes along following me, but half a second behind. Thankfully the driver spots her, stands on the breaks and gives her a good tooting.

For the next 5 minutes I was pretty cautious...

  • Commuter drafting lunacy:

Some bellchief decides to suck my wheel in the midst of traffic.

I slow down to let them pass.

I slow down more, as they are still not passing.

I slow down to little more than a walking pace, and they are still stuck to my back wheel.

    I stop.

    They stop.

    I look at them.

    They look at the ground.

Either I've stumbled across a secret cruising practice and pulled, or it's just WTF all round.
