Aeththetics ain't worth shit when the bike is left hanging on the wall due to a broken part ;-)
it's important for showing other people on forums and walking your bike to the pub.
this must explain the proliferation of old italian steel frames adorned with part worn campagnolo from yesteryear on this forum.
it can't be because of an interest in road cycling, surely nobody would choose that crap over modern groupsets like ultegra/DA, rival/force/red if they wanted to ride on the road? -

TBH I doubt there are many ppl out there who actually need anything above 105 and while modern frames and groupsets are great they probably far exceed most ppls needs.
How many compete to a level where they need all this stuff? Older groupset and frames are still just as good as they were, it's jsut that now there is something abit better.

Ha!
My Roberts has a modernish DA group (7700) and I love it, its obviously much better...
...but I also loved my old Carlton with a mishmash of Campag/DA from 70s and 80s, just for different reasons.
I don't think anyone would ever actually dispute that the latest development is inferior to the previous ones, I just find it funny that ppl actually go so far as to say if you enjoy road cycling you must have an upto-date version of one of the top groupsets - which is how I read MrSmyth's post.
I recently had an interesting convo with a friend, who had a very nice Condor/Ultegra built a couple of years ago, and he said if he was doing it again he wouldn't have bothered having the full Ultegra, because its not really necessary. And he does plenty of long, regular rides, and enters races from time to time.

nothing wrong in riding modern, well made, reliable, high performance groupsets that shift impeccably. just because you don't race doesn't mean you should deny yourself these luxuries.
people don't need organised gambling certified and crashed overpriced old technology race frames from half way around the world to ride in london. but plenty of willing sycophants spend their student loans on them only to have them nicked while on a cheap lager pavement drinking binge in londons famous londons east end.
nowt wrong with that. (well apart form the obvious stupidity but it's a free country)

i could not believe the jump from DA 7800 brakes to DA 7900 brakes, it felt like a massive upgrade
i dread to think how piss poor a 70's groupset would feel in comparison
