Slightly off topic but also slightly similar- I was walking to the gym a couple of days ago when a chap driving a van shouted "you fucking homo cunt!" at me, then turned to his passenger to admire his verbal dexterity.
The van was one of the pimlico plumbers fleet.
I doubt he'd have shouted without a passenger to impress with his homo spotting and insulting prowess, so I think it is basically higher primate chest beating in verbal and gestuure form.

I think it's just a way for the more Neanderthal man to get his kicks in a safe, private space where he can make an easy getaway. As though the car offers some temporary solace from the 21st century world they don't really belong in. Quite sad really.
I experienced the reversal of this earlier this week, stuck at a red light in Wimbledon when two girls crossing whistled and shouted "what's your number?" - 101 bitches?
Not really - I'd be stuck on 2 for quite a while and they were nice and friendly so I smiled back - but it's an interesting double standard on my part!

You can't underestimate the subconcious hatred some people have of cylists and cycling.
On Monday morning I was trying to get a
BorisKen bike from a stand by Charing Cross which wasn't working. I was on the phone to the call centre to see if there was a problem with my key or something and another bloke was stood beside me waing to see what they said.A painter and decorater in a van then drove past and shouted "Fucking cyclist cunts!" at us whilst we stood there, not on bikes just near bikes in shoes, shirt and tie with not even a helmet between us.
I thought it was hilarous at the time but christ what is going on in your head that the sight of someone just standing near a techno bike rack can send you off on one??
Speaking as a 'painter and decorator' I reckon he's probably been working for several days on site without a radio** that works. It's enough to frazzle your brain from sheer boredom. (that's no excuse though).
**for me it has to be radio 4 or I start getting abusive.

A friend of mine is a keen runner. She is constantly verbally abused when out on her daily runs. It's getting to the point where she is considering taking a camera with her to take pictures of these arseholes (all men) and start a blog to name and shame... I pointed her in the direction of 101wankers and she thinks its definitely a good idea. Unfortunately for the dickheads that put this abuse her way she is pretty strong willed and isn't put off. In fact their jibes actually want to make her run more. I also told her to take a D lock with her for some one time up the back of the head action.... She's from the North though so a swift "Fuck off you cunt" (heavy leeds accent) usually stops them in their tracks.

Anyone who suggested this blogger was baiting people or that her experience was in ANY way unusual, hey whats up you just came face to face with the reality of male privilege, dummy!
I don't ride a 'girly' bike at all, but riding daily i average at least four comments a week, ranging from negative/physical/sexual comment + beep to full on chase/tail and abuse. my boyfriend was riding with me recently and was shocked that this was something i was sadly resigned to.
as i am neither a svelve lycra amazonian or a cruising pashley type, i usually get one of these:
'percieved bad cycling + woman = insult pertaining to unsuitability for roadworthiness e.g. get off the road you fat bitch'
'general laddery + my own conscious inability to take being shouted at by a car full of men as a 'compliment' = attempt to take it back like 'fuck you you're actually ugly anyway'
Ironically the most serious abuse I've recieved in terms of threatening behaviour was just after a HollabackLDN meeting, where said car full of men who had been shouting 'hey gorgeous' changed tac and decided i would obvious submit to their advances if they tried to run me off the road.
Aside from the obvious patriarchy argument which probably isnt for here, one of the main reasons people shout is they're in a fast box of metal and feel invincible. Testimony does help to change attitudes, though, and also, if you see/hear this kind of thing happen while you're riding, for god's sake say something at least, even if its 'are you alright' to the victim. Solidarity! Plus It is a nice reminder that the dude-world isn't entirely populated by heinous lonerboners.

There's another one where they did the same, but in London and got stuck in a traffic jam within second of shouting 'bus wanker'.
and then a couple bloke promptly walked up and ask them what's the problem.

I suspect that the attitude of many male drivers to female drivers is very similar. It is just that women cyclists are more exposed and open to abuse and, simply, vulnerable.
