  • Got mine, satin black track frame with a custom headtube. Absolutely buzzin, everything i could have ever wanted from a bike's geometery.

    #hispaintersabitcrap imo

  • Doesn't he get his paint done at Atlantic Boulevard in Manchester...?

    The Feathers that I have seen in the flesh look well done.

  • #hispaintersabitcrap imo

    He's been through a few different ones, none of whom have been that great, but I met up with him in London the other month and he was raving about his new guys.

    The paint on mine is ok, it's a bit orange peel-y in places but it's good enough.

    Is yours the one with the hand carved into the headtube?

  • Yeah man, i like working with my hands, honestly i am bowled over by the frame completely, its just that everytime i ride it seems to get a stone chip, which then flakes and is driving me nuts (as its such a gorgeous frame) It just seems as though they havent used the proper primer or something as every time it gets marked its right down to the metal, not fun. Anyway he offered me half of the money towards a powdercoat and im tempted to armourtex it. Its just such a shame that it happened to me, i've seen a few of his other frames and they are all gorgeous but it just seems as though the painters he used on mine just weren't thinking.

  • Shame. I think he's really had a lot of issues with painters. One of them wouldn't ever actually give him a price until they'd done the work... How is he supposed to quote a price to his customers? :/

    Anyway - yeah, mine is amazing to ride as well. Never ridden a bike like it.

  • Yeah couldn't agree more, literally haven't ever had anything between my legs that rides like it!

    saying that theres been some come close of the female kind ;)

  • Even the best painter in the world can't speed up paint cure.
    2 to 4 weeks its a very logical time for a paint to "breathe"
    out its moisture and regain its strength.

    Double that.... at least

    do you believe that a 853 tubeset, it's small parts with bridges,
    drop outs, lugs, mostly hand crafted and a decent paint
    can covered by 350?
    including work shop cost, tools and faults?

    if you do, please refer links with prizes.

  • .

  • Is it yours?

  • Blimey!

  • Thanks! I don't think it's technically a bi-laminate on the seat sleeve - maybe that's what you'd call it, you'd have to ask Ricky. I have to admit that was the one feature I specifically wanted on mine that was also on Sam's track frame, which was the frame that got me excited about Ricky's work in the first place. It's basically a fastback style but with the top tube also fillet brazed to the sleeve rather than lugged. That was exactly the idea, to then match the style of the headtube and seat tube areas. The BB is fully fillet brazed.

    Have to say, Sam's frame mentioned here is the absolute sex in the flesh!

    Err what?

    A good friend of mine got this frame built by Ricky last year. I can remember exactly what she payed, but it was in the £850-900 region.. including chroming.

  • I think you'd be looking at a base price of about £1000 now before chrome, custom lug carving, etc.

    doctor_john, the confusion is because we're not sure what you were referring to with the "300-350" figure.

  • I think he means that's the rough cost of labour.

    ie

    Labour = £3-350
    tubeset = x
    small parts = y
    tools = z

    Total (before paint) = All of the above.

    FWIW in VAT Argos charge:

    **853 **- £1,350
    725 - £1,200
    525 - £1,100

    So you can see a good chunk of any frame cost is build and VAT.

  • Ricky undercharges for his time IMO. It's obvious how many hours he puts in. The inside of my bottom bracket shell is the neatest thing I've ever seen.

    This is how he does his air expansion holes:

  • I'm going to start saving up for a Feather frame, if anyone here fancies pm'ing me a rough figure as to how much an 853 track frame might cost that'd be grand. Yes I realize the final price is going to depend on a load of different factors, and once I have a more detailed idea of what I want I'll ask the man himself.

    I think you'd be looking at a base price of about £1000 now before chrome, custom lug carving, etc.

    sorry guys. i misread kirkov's phrase as "a grand" reckon this as a 1000 pounds...
    and made my calculus with that in mind..
    what is the average price for a feather track frame?

  • i was close, even with my poor readability..
    i can't find a reynolds tubing dealer to do a descent calculation
    but i can count 853 as a spirit oversize tubeset.

    So, an improvised calculation (hobbyist prices) will be;
    £350 for tubeset, small parts, welding rob etc.
    £200 for paint, including anti oxidize treatment, decals, lugs masking etc.
    £100 i assume about the cost of workshop (power, rent, cutters, grinders, spare tubes etc)
    doesn't that means it has a £350-400 profit to cover tokyofixed commission, insurance
    and be paid for a week? am i wrong?

    I know it's not cheap but i can't say that it's overpriced.
    after all its a unique bike very carefully handcrafted..

  • They are easily easily worth the money^^

  • Saw one heading SE on Wednesday evening and was a beaut.

  • Don't think you did mon ami, I live in nottigham. Sorry broski

  • Glad he's found a painter he's happy with.

  • That finish does look a big step up from what I've seen.

  • Have to say, Sam's frame mentioned here is the absolute sex in the flesh!

    It really is. I'd definitely be happy with a Feather.
