each one, teach one.
as maya angelou says, if you don't like something change it, if you can't change it, change yourself.
We (and I use the "we" of us on here who love cycling, and want everyone else to love cycling, and be safe whilst doing it, to acknowledge the risks and rewards of it, and to do so coherently and with forethought) need to let people know in the nicest and politest way possible, that their actions have consequences and we want them to become better and safer riders, and to continue to ride into the future rather than just when the weather is good.
To do that we need to communicate with them. So Each One, Teach One. Spoke cards, having a chat at lights, business cards with cycle training schemes/trainers on them. Whatever it is, and whether its a personal thing or a forum thing, or some other organisation thing, WE have to do more rather than just blaming them, and spitting bile at them. Yeah they could learn by getting taken out by something or one, but wouldn't it be better if we helped them acquire the knowledge and experience we have easier.Wiganwill has a point about our vilification of the nodder, but the problem is, there's no point in railing against what is, if you have no thoughts about what will be, and if we want them to go from nodder to sophisticated and knowledgeable cyclist about town, we may all have to give them a helping hand.
So time to overcome our politeness coccoons and get out there and speak to our cycling brethren and sisthren to help them be better more confident, alert, aware cyclists..
be well
i guess it's 4:20 in australia right now...

If you are on a bike and the most vulnerable vehicle on the road then everything is potentially the enemy whether it be nodders, cars,HGV's,taxis, white van men, peds or whatever. Likewise cyclists can be highly irritating if you are driving.

only tolerate incomers if those incomers are willing to toe the line.
How is this diffrent to any other group of people? In a large group you always have to tow the line to some extent, whether this is work or a club or even diffrent groups of friend in some way we all tow the line.

@ Damo in new Zealand now and it was like eight in the evening, (sticks out Tongue in juvenile way)
@ the rest of you what's that blurb they had for the last star wars film fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, etc
you've got to get past the everythings out to kill me mentality to a calmer place and put it into perspective, yeah sometimes things can be a bit "shit you put the fear of god in me, I thought I was gonna die" but you didn't so take a breath and let them know what they did and how they scared you and it'd be better if they didn't do that in future ( preferably in a calm and coherent manner)
otherwise your just another rabid red light jumping, pavement hogging cyclist who shouldn't be on be roads seeing as you don't pay any road tax.Just a thought..

^Pissed again. As your adoptive father I say, with love and kindness, get some help, you have an illness! You're sick, diseased, corrupt.
Now go to bed.

I did my bit last night. I told a cyclist that his back light was dying out and that in any case he should get something better than one LED. I concluded with "sell the fluoro jacket and get good lights". He laughed and thanked me for my advice.

I've said it before and I'm saying it again; this forum does not really want the number of cyclists in London to increase. It pays lip service to the idea but it doesn't really mean it.
the truth.

I can't stand the expression 'nodder'. As Corny says, if people still have to learn something from you, help them out. Try to remember when you started out yourself. Show consideration--you can afford to. Give them something to aspire to.
Creating divisions among street users is a stupid attitude. When people are on bikes, they take up less space than when they're in cars, and it's far easier to live with others. Potential mistakes are much less of a worry than when people are in cars. It's good. People on bikes don't pollute much.
If you're an ancient, hoary, insurpassable cycling expert on the best bike ever, whose riding stops people in their tracks with its beauty and elegance, who's the best invention since differential gearing, who's the only cyclist visible from space, remember that imitation, even poor imitation, is the most sincere form of flattery.
More and more bike riders FTW!

My only serious cyling injury thus far was caused by a bromptonenger, so they can fuck off back to the playground with their teeny wheels.
Other than that, +1.

look at you trying to worm your way into my family
I was wondering the same thing. Some people can't cycle and are a danger to themselves and others. Those people shouldn't be nodding along jumping red lights while listening to music. Its pretty simple really. Why does everything round here have to get so complicated?
