Evader, blowing their cover by dredging a 6 year old thread.

  • there are 6 year old threads?

  • I do like the 6 year old threads.

  • What happened to T-V? I saw a post from only a couple of days ago and noticed that the name had been blacked out.

    He requested deletion.
What?? THAT'S terribly sad :-( another good one goes.
    Tatty viking, you'll be missed.

  • This ad reminded me that your post is at odds with the *advisory *note in the Classifieds Rules, regarding whether a price is stated, leaving a grey area between the two: should a price now be a requirement?

    No.

I'm not going to act in a way that prevents people from selling items that they don't know how to price.

Just because they don't know how to price something doesn't mean that it's an auction. So long as there is an intent to sell, and they will accept the first reasonable offer, it's not a "best price wins" auction.

The difference may be too subtle for you, but it is one I'm going to fight for. Some of the best items come from people who have had custom things made, or held on to them for so many years, that they have no idea of what to ask for. I want to encourage those people to still be involved rather than drive them to eBay. This is why it's an advisory only.

A price is NOT required but that doesn't mean everything without a price is by default an auction.

  • OK, thanks for the explanation.

The difference is not too subtle for me, thank you; but it wasn't, previously, apparent what you intended.

  • Should this trader have been deleted? It looks as though there is unfinished bidness.

  • I just had a great idea. Possibly one for Microcosm.
Make it possible to a member to be placed into 'tweet mode' (or something similarly named), which would make it impossible for them to type more than 140 characters into a post.
And maybe it could also make them wait 2 minutes before posting again in the same thread.

This might be a solution to the problem of those users who continue arguing in long rambling non-sequiturs long after people have got sick of it.

  • Sounds easier for individuals to simply have a middle ground ignore function. One that lets you put certain members on character maximums. If they excede this maximum all you see is TLDR.

I've no idea who'd this be used for though.

Why not call it censorship mode, because that's what it is.

  • Not really. They can still post their opinion. They would just need to think very carefully about their argument in order to distill it down to 140 characters, which may help them develop the self-awareness to realise that they have nothing to say :-)

I think that's not a bad idea, it's not really censorship but forces self censoring by making one think before posting, which would improve a lot of people's output.

It's not so much a gagging order as a muffling order, tho the question of who and when to apply it could be tricky.

Sounds easier for individuals to simply have a middle ground ignore function. One that lets you put certain members on ignore for a specified duration

This might be easier to implement and more useful. When you add somebody to your ignore list, have a dialogue box where you can choose to ignore forever or just for a week.

  • Could do something based on incremental back-off, so if you take a break you're allowed a few longer posts, then the limit creeps down 1120, 560, 280, 140...
