As he's passed, I've changed his account to a state (read-only) in which he can't post.

That sounds daft in the context, but it means that his account will not be susceptible to being hacked, password guessed (recent Adobe breach, etc) and for no-one to notice and for it to freak people out.

That's just the label that comes with the security setting.

Only if your username has an @ added first through right? Meaning that a username without an @ can be used without giving an automatic alert.. Would be useful in this thread for example.

Also usful for people with normal words as usernames...

You'd then have to make a judgement about those doing the vouching; unless that function was restricted to a "Holy Trinity" of, for example, Velocio, Hippy and Skydancer.

I'll not do a verification tick thing. There's no need for it.

Surely it is open to any member who wishes to self verify, to do so by using a tick mark (or swoosh or whatever) as their avatar.

No, but there is mileage in going outside to meet the real people behind the avatars, look into their eyes, shake them by the hand, and make your own judgement about their character.
