This is like a epic shout of repost. You cannot expect many people to have seen it. People have been using rep in the belief that it is private, rightly or wrongly, and you must be aware that they have. To make public previous rep given or deducted now would be the biggest shit-stir in the history of the forum.

5 Years and it's not like I even sang a different tune the various times it's come up.

So how about I make all rep public, and attached to the post... rather than private, and attached to the user?

No. Rep is just a private little comment to another user. A quick PM if you like. Turning the forum into some hideous pinkbike detracts from the actual comments and normal slagging off of users. Leave it as it is and stone all those who want change. Change bad. Change scary.

I quite like the cryptic asides I've received in my rep. And the humourous comments. And the insults. Never felt patronised by it.

I really can't consider them private, regardless of how everyone has used them. There's a public interface for them in the PHP code which doesn't have a permissions layer on it.

It may be obscure, you may not know the address and syntax... but comments never have been private.

The only piece of data on the site that is private, is the one that says private in the title... private messages.

And my trolling is in suggesting I'm going to nuke rep, I'm not. I really thought you all knew me well enough to know that.

But I'm not trolling when I say that tags, comments, these things were never supposed to be, or should have been presumed to be, private... hence my repeating that over the years.
