I don't really tell that many people to get bent. Even when I'm busy banning people, I think it's quite well known that if I'm left alone unhassled for a while I'd probably let people back.
Yeah I know. Which is why it's good I'm not in charge of this place :)
And Bruce as has been pointed out, I mean that I like being able to see which posts of mine have got a reaction and I'm happy for that to stay just between me and the person commenting.
But I do agree with you it doesn't work for classifieds.

So how about I make all rep public, and attached to the post... rather than private, and attached to the user?
-
• #10556
if you did that retroactively it would be like enabling tags and popcorn on every thread.
-
• #10557
how about show the fact it's positive or negative and who gave it but only show the message to the person receiving it.

I've only ever said that PMs are private, nothing else is. I think I explicitly stated in the past that rep comments are not, they just happen not to be visible in interface today.

Now look what you did to Clive! Does anybody have any smelling salts?

I have no objections to it on show so long as it doesn't take up loads of space. I've been on other forums where they have a "members who found this post useful" section below a post. Fine until the section takes up three times as much space as the post.

Same forums which allow 300 pixels of signature?

But I don't want anyone to ever be under an illusion that the comments system (a.k.a. reputation) is private. It is not. Future upgrades might expose reputation, and you shouldn't use that part of the forum to exchange private data. I may have hidden some of the front-end, but that does not make it private. Hell, the admin control panel allows me to view the reputation... whereas I have no means at all to view the private messages. So one is private (PMs) and the other is not private (reputation/comments).

going down some sort of social networking road?
I refer you to my earlier comments directed at bruce.by attaching rep tp the user, the user gets to see where people are agreeing or enjoying what they say and where people are not. People should neg more as a way of expressing offence or displeasure. It seems to me that too many people on here think that rep should be limited to +1s like some sort of big lets be polite to each other love in.
If people are ganging up on people, fuck their rep up for them, if people are getting all moany about a little bit of genuine criticism, tell them to HTFU and reflect on why they got a -1.
-
• #10566
negs with a positive comment to provide confusion
-
• #10567
I think it's more that you have a theory that you can adjust behaviour by slapping people on the wrist (-1), and others have a theory that you can adjust behaviour by telling someone what a good job they're doing (+1).
Doesn't rep make everyone feel like a child being patronised by others?
-
• #10568
I quite like the cryptic asides I've received in my rep. And the humourous comments. And the insults. Never felt patronised by it.

But rep is still practically useless for Classifieds.
Neg rep means you're a wanker, I don't buy from wankers. Works for me.
Anyway, don't any of you wankers have a job?

This is like a epic shout of repost. You cannot expect many people to have seen it. People have been using rep in the belief that it is private, rightly or wrongly, and you must be aware that they have. To make public previous rep given or deducted now would be the biggest shit-stir in the history of the forum.

It would be wrong for me to agree with Will on anything rep related, so... Make it public! Now! Do it!

You've got to admit, it would be funny to do it while Pisti isn't here

Why?
Although I can see why will's scared, some of the sexy rep I've got from him... I'm the only one right?
Easy, lad. I'm not saying I want it that way, but several people on the previous page seem to think it has that kind of function. I'm just pointing out that it doesn't.
But rep is still practically useless for Classifieds.
