After hearing the tragic news about Barry Mason it would seem rude not to.

  • I never heard of Barry but after reading up on him tonight I wish I had. I hope that in my small part of helping on this ride I can do even a half good job as he managed year on year. I wish I had half his passion.

  • I just booked my train ticket to the Big Smoke. Also, Sparky, in regard to this:

We need to sort out a van to get people back to Norwich, Spence. Maybe my other half or yours could be bribed to do it?

Reckon there could be up to ten of us, so it would be really cheap. Just pile everyone in the back. What do you reckon?

I may have something in mind for Norwich locals (though you wont be on by then, deserter!).

  • Anyone got a link to a useful-guide-to-the-Dunwich-Dynamo-for-Dunwich-Dynamo-first-timers please?

  • Brilliant, thank you.

  • ^erm, this?

    http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/content/dunwich-dynamo

The map on that page doesn't seem to be in print any more.

Does anyone know of a newer version or a place we can download and print a cribsheet/map? Or should we just grab them on the night?

this is the 2008 route from that page. if you want a more detailed thing I guess www.ordnancesurvey.com will probably help or get them on the night

ill be getting one on the night probably from a service station but seeing as im driving ill see it as an investment into future essex/suffolk/wherever the hell it is we are going riding

  • This is the link to the route Fluff and I followed last year if it's any help
    http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=djvhtbeykbuugnvb

It can be downloaded as a GPX or TCX (so you can follow it) file on any Garmin.

I dont know whether there are any route changes this year, but if not - help yourselves, it got us there.

  • There will be plenty of maps up on Bikely, BikeHike and all the other bike mapping services. Some other people have blogged the routesheet.
However, money from selling the routesheets goes towards supporting the work of both the London School of Cycling and Southwark Cyclists, both of whom put in a tremendous amount of effort into making the Dunwich Dynamo an accessible and viable event for anyone who wants to give it a go. As well as that, I think it's part of the fun to get a routesheet at least once (any hint of rain and make sure you bring a sandwich bag or similar to keep it dry(ish)). In the end you don't really need a routesheet if you're leaving after 8.30pm and I suspect more so this year as I'm anticipating a similar/bigger year than last. You just follow the line of people strung out in front.
If you don't buy a routesheet on the night and you're not using the SC coach, I urge you to make at least a small donation to the people that are selling them. It's vital to cycling in London that LSC and SC continue to do the good work that they've been carrying out over the years.

  • ^^this.

  • Can you just turn up and buy the route sheet? If so I'll give a donation on the night.

  • That's the way it's worked for many years.

  • Awesome I'll do that then. I might just print one off as well just in case. Really looking forward to this, last year I was cycling through France the night of this - no excuses this year!!

  • Coach tickets (incl. bike transport in a removal truck and the presence of a support vehicle throughout the ride) will go on sale through the LFGSS shop in a few hours' time- they'll be £15 each, coach and truck will arrive at Dunwich beach at around 10am and leave at around 11.30. The removal company's insurance covers goods up to £5000 so you put your bike in at your own risk etc.

Same as last year, tickets will be non-refundable as the forum is subsidising this (cheers Velocio!) and it's a blimmin' good deal.

I'll post again on this thread when they go on sale- still in need of someone to step up and shoulder the responsibility of wrapping bikes in blankets and strapping 'em into the truck..

  • I don't mind "wrapping bikes in blankets and strapping 'em into the truck.." but not on my own. I think it's a 2-3 person job

  • Plenty of cardboard will do the trick for packing them as well.

  • Cheers! I think so too. Anyone else?
The removal company are providing one blanket per bike for free, and they're reusable!

  • Happy to help wrap the bikes too. Have a weak right shoulder so lifting will be a problem.

Of course this assumes bruv and I get to Dunwich in time. If I make it, I'll help.

  • I'd be happy to help with that too - along as people promise not to sue me for scratching their limited edition crabon!* ;)

*You should probably also bear in mind that I lost my own bike on the beach last year...

  • Did you find it again???
