  • hahahah

  • beer.

don't worry that's already on the menu this eve.

  • Very timely. Having a(nother) guiness at the minute :-).

  • what's the best thing to eat today for recovery? more carbs or more protein or both?

Just a balanced amount, protein and carbs. You're not really eating for recovery today as much as you would/should have been in the hour afterwards.

  • You're not really eating for recovery today as much as you would/should have been in the hour afterwards.

That would be fry-up (protein) and beer (carbs)

  • You're not really eating for recovery today as much as you would/should have been in the hour afterwards.

regrets eating an oily jelly baby and two pints of Guinness during this critical hour (and, indeed, the next six)

    • riding with SE's lot for almost the whole way then - massive thanks to Chainbreaker, OneLessCardigan, OldSkoolRacer and Hovis for making me laugh and push through the pain (the goddamn tandem, the dancing, the groans at every hill!!!), you were all amazing and I couldn't have done it without you!

was a good group we had going at the end, collecting the lost and injured of the forum, Autobus style!

i'd just like to point out the tandem that MG is cursing was NOT billundben and tapsandbath. i'm sure they were a pleasure to ride with although i don't remember seeing them til the end.

Very special thanks out to Simon (OLC), you did a spectacular job of looking after whoever was in your field of vision.

cheers Iain! i'm sorry i dropped you that one time I'd made a special point of waiting while you sorted out your electrolyte solution because i knew it would be hard work catching our bunch again. it took me ages and somewhere along the way, you lost my wheel.
but i remembered! much later when i dropped back to support jess, i said to her "our lot are way too far ahead now to catch up. but iain's behind us, if we go slow, he'll find us"...and you did :-D

and that was the start of our merry band for the finish. we picked up the lost sumo and later the lost cyclotron3k. and OSR and hovis, matt having bonked because he'd left all his energy gels too late, and needed a break, then binged on all his gels and act like a hyper kid all the way to the beach..."they've got us surrounded!" and "get out of the way Boardman!" being my favourite OSR moments

  • No it was the mad tandem with terrible chillout tunes that smugly cut me up and made me test out my new brakes sharpish only to then stop right in front of me for a break a mile down the line IN THE ROAD.

Matt was definitely on top form. Made me go even more deliriously loopy, the giggles kept me going.

  • Wildlife post:

    A few bats.
    A dead hedgehog.
Dead bee found after it flew down my top: cue flapping and chest beating to kill it dead. Luckily got the sting and venom sac out through the means of flapping.

Not sure if I win the wildlife badge.

  • I saw some bird with a tremendous wingspan swoop in and out of the bushes to the left of me very quickly indeed, at just above head height, a second or two before I arrived at that point.

I also swallowed an unidentified bug which flew straight down, didn't touch the sides.

    And yes, plenty of roadkill.

  • Oh yeah just remembered, apologies to Braker for his fall, all just to lend me a pump. As for the blood stain in your shorts, douse it in white wine, or piss, something like that, works a treat.

  • That would be fry-up (protein) and beer (carbs)

Come on, we all know that one beer is OK but after that things start going rapidly up shit creek.

  • Just a balanced amount, protein and carbs. You're not really eating for recovery today as much as you would/should have been in the hour afterwards.

thanks. will remember next time to gorge on more food

  • Ride report (because i'm not bothering to do any work today)...

Rolled down to the start leaving Scott to continue his pissing-about trying to get ready. Bumped into Branwen just before arriving, which was cool. Good to have a catch-up, pal. Found the Party Peloton / Goofy Grupetto and hung around smoking fags and not being able to move for about an hour. Lost most forumengers after a few minutes, wacky races style, so CG and I decided to stop at the roundabout before Epping and gather-up a group again. Got a decent bunch together, but Tibbs was clearly partying hard somewhere in Hackney.

    Epping Forest is shit.

Arrived at the scene of the downed rider. Glad to hear all is ok - a lot of people were discussing it over the course of the night. Rolled along bumping into various forumengers, which was nice. Stopped at a pub, Chainbreaker shouted a lot and took photos. Stopped at another pub, ate a sausage roll and saw some dogs. Stopped at the feed station, Gave Ludwig a tube, and ate beans from matching Thermos flasks with CG.

Rolled along some more felling pretty shit and wishing i'd remembered to bring my ipod and speaker. I remember sections with Fox, Branwen, Laner, Sumo, Samuelson etc, but really it's a bit of a blur. Saw Dancing James 100 times, ffs.

Last 20 miles was crap. The legs were still there, but I was very drowsy and feeling a bit fucko'd, so when I stopped to give CG my pump, I stacked it like a fool in the middle of the road. Got blood on my Rapha.

Rolled in, got changed into my jimjams on the beach, drank a bottle of wine at the pub, had a kip in the glorious pub garden, had a Sauna on the coach, arrived at Smithfields, cruised home.

Great ride and good company. Drifted off to sleep with the sound of Watson the Wonderdog howling for his master's return. It took me 30mins this morning to work out if it was 6pm or 6am :-/

    LOL

And you mate, although you scared me, appearing like that on my shoulder.
Great ride, although now I know why my rear wheel suddenly started rubbing brake blocks/chain stays, first broken spoke in 5 years(maybe something to do with sam being on my shoulder at the start ...).

This did not occur to me at all when I stopped to sort it out at 4am, and disconnecting my rear brake made far more sense! Was glad to have my tunes for the ride back to Halesworth, was lovely to see people riding in, and got lots of smiles. Was less happy when the group I was riding with got lost on the way in, taking us 1.6 Miles away from Halesworth. Was very tempted to pack it in at that point, rather than ride on 12 Miles to Dunwich, knowing I would have to ride back again (small complaint I know but at that point it hurt!)

  • @braker, yeah i saw DJ a lot at the food stops, didn't see him once on the road!

rode with you from time to time :)

@cafewanda, didn't see you at all after london fields! same goes for amygdala. and in reverse, punkture who i only saw in the pub in dunwich. it was chaotic enough trying to keep with anyone you knew, let alone seeking out everyone you knew

  • WOW, yeah, great!!!
What a night, great ride. Can really see why DD is so loved. Really pleased I did it.
Feel A fuckin OK today, which is odd as I usually get exercise hangover. Feel like i cheated a bit by not doing it fixed! Next year.
Lovely to bump into forumengers en route for a bit of company (Crispin, Simon, Paul, Tibbs, Jenni, skully, James....). Great fry up n pint at the Ship with SE crew, Laner, Sumo etc, cheers.
Must give thanks for the en route company, organizers, good weather, thank you to my bike for not going wrong and not hurting my arse too badly, thanks to Fruitbat for the derailleurs you flogged me about a year and a half ago!
MAXIMUM respect to Tricitybendix and others for riding back.
Glad the downed rider is ok!
    Cheers

  • Sorry I'm shit at matching up forum names with faces, who was rolling with me and braker when I had my puncture?
