I haven't ridden in ages, just to training and back. Tempted to remove myself from the list :(
Or do you guys think I can sneak in a couple of rides and still make it, but slowly?Oliver advocated the slow approach, right?
-
• #129
You don't have to ride the DD at extremely high speed. If you pace yourself a little between now and then, you should be fine.
And it bears saying over and over again: Anyone with moderate fitness can ride 116 miles. You've done the DD before, and so you have some experience as to how your worries were probably greater than the actual difficulty of the ride. It's very easy to get yourself into the state of mind that it's an unsurmountable task, but if you haven't aged massively or get injured, what you have done before on a bike, you will probably be able to do again.
With you, I would suspect that the main variable is your back, anyway, Pascal?
-
• #130
Nah, back is getting better and better since I started doing deadlifts, weights and all that ... I just haven't had much time in the saddle.
I am sure I could force myself through it, but I would want to have fun first and foremost. This time around it might just not be fun at all if I did it the same way, which was as fast as I could. Maybe if I'd just cruise along and stop for bacon burgers and bitter shanties ...

If that's a typo, it may be the best one in the world, if not then kudos pascalo, kudos.
The northern long shot is looking pretty likely now. I've looked over some logistical points (getting food and water) and it looks pretty doable.

I'll be doing it geared unless I get my freewheel back on my fixed gear. Bugger doing that fixed my knees will be crying.

After doing 126 miles in one day with panniers and a headwind last weekend (hellish, but I finished), I'm considering trying this and getting back home to Norwich at the end. We'll see.

Do it! Great idea and eminently doable.

I'll join you on that one lad, we did 140 one day in France when we got lost last year. So hopefully being on the Norfolk/Suffolk boarder will help.
Also I think I'll take the second leg easy, maybe a fry up in the morning will help.
-
• #139
Maybe we can have a nap on the beach, then head off and try to find a fry-up on the way home? I remember people waiting in the queue for 45 mins at the beach for a fry-up at the cafe there and it was pretty disappointing-looking.

Due to a wedding happening on the same day as the Dunwich, I will NOT be running an LFGSS coach this year.
However, I am happy to fund a coach if someone else fully takes on all of the organisation for one.
What this translates to is:
- I stump up the costs (max £500 on coach, £300 on van)
- Each person on the coach pays something (say, £10, non-refundable even if they can't make it) which covers some of the costs, but leaves the forum subsidising the rest
- Someone needs to own organising this
Organisation is:
- Find and book a coach (I can recommend P&J Ellis, who we used last year)
- Find and book a van capable of carrying 50 bicycles (I have nothing to help you here, and it needs to be more like a furniture truck than a van... and it needs a lot of blankets and bubble wrap)
- Take care of getting yourself to the end early-ish
- Oversee the packing of bikes
- Oversee getting just forum members who have paid onto the coach
- Oversee pairing people up with bikes back in London
If someone is willing to do this work, I am very happy to cover the upfront costs and then just re-coup a portion of the money. In effect, I'm happy for the forum to subsidise the costs.
Why run a forum bus?
Well, it means you can be more sure of the safe transport of your bikes, you leave the site as soon as you're all there (which means not waiting around), it's cheaper per head than the Southwark buses.
Why not to run a bus?
It's a pain in the arse to organise.
So if there's a volunteer who is willing to take full responsibility and do all of the work involved, the money to subsidise it is there.
However, be aware that the wedding that I'm attending is a forum wedding. It's yet to be fully announced and invites sent out, but it is planned and will probably result in a number of people dropping out of the Dynamo.
Anyhow, you have my full support, but it's only financial. If someone wants this responsibility, then once you're sure you want it... PM me and we can go from there.

Sounds good to me buddy. My sister will be coming along this year and her partner (who I cycled to France with) so to be honest I'm more along for the experience than beating a record time or anything. Kind of like Audax training.
I might take a carradice saddle bag so I don't take panniers that I'll fill for the sake of it, at least then I'll still have some room for layers/snacks.
-
• #142
Yeah, I'm not looking to set any records. Will be doing the same thing: small pack full of chocolate and Nuun, and maybe even a bivi bag to catch a nap in at the other end.

Fingers crossed it will be nice and warm so I can just kip in a jumper on the beach.

In. -

Sumo I think It's just an open invitation isn't it? You can just turn up and ride.
-
• #147
Yeah, no signing-up necessary. Just arrive and ride.
-

Going to chat to the boss, am keen for this.
-
• #149
Are we doing the coaches again? That was a godsend. As was the personal halfway stop. I say we take it one step further and have a little BBQ with bacon rolls and sausages. Obviously someone has to give up a night and not ride, plus we need a van etc etc etc

The coach back was brilliant last year but the organising of it sounds like a nightmare. Would certainly stump up at least a tenner for a seat if anyone has the skills to arrange it.
