  • There's nothing wrong with the bike, but I want to off road tour from now on (didn't really enjoy my on road tour) - hence the sale.

    Quoted for future nyah nyahs.

  • Too small :(

  • JB- shirley keep it until practicality trial?

Ps- I think touring on your own is hard. I expect having someone else makes it slightly more enjoyable. Others may disagree, and I gained a lot from my Stateside adventures, but in retrospect and often midway through a day's riding I got pretty low or worse- angry.

  • I wasn't low or angry, I just don't like cycling slowly on the road, as stupid as that may sound. I like riding as fast as possible therefore it wasn't really for me. To have ridden circa 550 fully loaded, incredibly hilly and at points, mountainous miles, in six days was way quicker than I'd ever anticipated because after the 1st day, I just wanted it to be over. Glad I did it though, don't get me wrong.

  • What makes you think you will enjoy riding off-road for days at a time more enjoyable?

  • Going fully loaded on your first tour with a high mileage always going to feel rough, it usually take people between 3-6 days to get used to it.

  • I'd be the same, i feel sluggish just carrying a heavy bag and sluggish is a real buzzkill for me

  • I wish I'd gone off road somewhere today. Had planned a long, gentle road ride and gave up after 50km or so. Combination of apathy, boredom and a raging hangover after a week reading about gravel roads and forest tracks in Wales and assorted Bridleways around the rest of the UK.

Letting the bike carry it or carrying it on your body?

Of course you'll feel sluggish, you don't instantly get used to it after leaving 10 minutes from your home.

Remember how unfit you were? and you can do 10 miles without breaking a sweat nowadays, same logic with touring, just get used to it and the bike start to feel normal.

  • The only upshot was riding with an older guy for 10 minutes who was explaining the history of his bike. Built as a path-type trainer from an old racer he picked it up in quite a state, had it fully restored and built up with priest bars, 3 speed SA hub, 650b wheels, modded Carradice handlebar bag (not the new boxy ones) and some nice modern touches (Ti Tubus Fly, VO Sabot pedals...)

Really nice chap. Hope to see him out again sometime!

Where are you reading about the Welsh forest trails? I'd really like to put some fat tyres on the tourer and get some off road miles in this summer.

  • Re Wales: We've a week by the Elan valley planned in summer, going to be great!

  • I think I started on the Bearbones Bikepacking site/forum and then random Googleing/Google Maps exploration

  • I miss being able to ride quickly.

I'm sure you'll be blitzing it on 3" knobblies

  • Hasn't that been sold yet? Must be some kind of jb record ...

Don't you know the latest fad? fat tyres are like, faster dude.

I know this, i ridden with trailors, loaded baskets n' stuff before, its a hole different style of riding, i'm used to the quick surge of power from a track bike.

  • I just don't like cycling slowly on the road.

Isn't that what bicycle touring is? Going slow and seeing the sights.

  • Me thinks JB was in a rush to get to the pretty LA sights (and food)

  • Functional aircraft thread >>>>>>>>>>>

  • Jeez, that must've slow you down to a crawl.

  • More time to take in the scenery

  • That's about the same amount of stuff Vin Cox used to cycle 18,000 miles :-)
