The Troll works well as a 650b ( essentially a 1x1 with added braze-ons ).

Because you can't put 2.1 29ers tyres on it, that's the point I'm getting at.

Ok but you don't take care about BB high is just for pseudo "VERSATILITY" ?
Nobody gonna die when the BB is raised a bit.
When you can put 650b 2.3 tires or more I don't understand why it's interesting to put 29ers wheels with 2.1tires, ratio, BB high are changed. It's like putting 650c wheels in place of 700c wheels.
Where are the interest I don't know.650B mean that it can fit those who are less than 5'4, and won't be too small for those who's over 6'4.
Currently 700c old road frame can easily be converted into a 650B with 38mm tyres which is getting quite common nowadays.

although I hate to sign up for a 'market trend' this is the biggest reason I am kind of sold on 650b; being a midget

I know, 1x1 is cheaper though and I'd only really use hub gears if I went down that route...

Getting really tempted by one of these + mudguards + front Gamoh rack + some bars with more rise to replace my ageing (30+ yrs old) commute/town bike.....

I have an older model when they still came with all the functional stuff and
it's great. -

Dangeruss, something to consider is that these modern oversized, compact geo frames can be pretty harsh and unforgiving compared to old bikes. I have a similar modern hybrid and it is a real boneshaker, so harsh it actually slows riding down considerably because you cannot glide over potholes, but have to smash your way through.
Also consider that, amongst high end commuter bikes like that, you can find some with integrated dynamo lights amongst other features which are useful like mudguards.

Wouldn't tires make more of a difference than frame tubing/geometry?

It does, but only so much.
That alu fork will be pretty unforgiving.
Got me thinking about building a 650b 1x1 rather than an Ogre. Realistically I'm not going to be doing a big off road tour any time soon and it'd probably end up being much more fun to thrash around on in the summer.
