^^I've transported 3m lengths of pipe by bike often, even 25kgs of plaster but never a load like this;

Not seen a Surly with SS joints before, that's nice. Big chainring and QR pointing up and that'd be pornworthy.

QR on the correct side would also help. Personally I'd flip the stem or get a 0deg in there.

I keep lusting after the idea of using an old Kona Lava dome as a utility bike. In my head it's either a 26" 1x9 with massive slicks and flats with a thumbie, or a 2x9 650B conversion plus 'gaurds with drops.
Because Lava Domes go for a fair whack second hand (according to the five seconds of googling I did) you might be able to achieve a similar effect with FBNPNA's favourite marmite bike the Cotic Roadrat?
^^ those SS joints are new for 2013 apparently on the Trucker Deluxe.

If you like that, you'd probably really like a Surly Traveler's Check

It's a Harry Quinn, I need new decals for it

Not sure if getting old, or starting to see appeal of a rack.....
-
• #3966
you're getting old. It should be either cargo bike or bike packing...

i'm not old, just boring and practical.......
loving the Surlys above. especially the one with the trailer.

@cedywedy adding racks to your Quinn?

I've put big slicks on lava done. It's great but the mud guards took a bit of messing around to get them to fit!

i don't really want to, but I might have to. I need to work out what I can carry with saddle/bar/frame bags. I think you need a stiff frame for racks & paniers so I'd rather keep the bike feeling great when loaded up.
The only thing I like about panniers is that you can take them off and keep them in the tent very easily. Also good for repairing a puncture for example, you can take the load off the bike in 2 seconds. -

Just get two small front panniers for the rear instead, force you to take what necessary and avoid it from feeling noodly.
Light steel rack is worth going for like the Tubus Fly.

One more thing on this: is your choice of 1x9 vs. 2x9 directly related to the wheel size choices and if so, how? Genuine question.

FBNPNA? Forum Bike Nerds _ _ _ ?
Lusting just because it was a slow couple of days at work and I was dreaming about quitting, moving to the French countryside and what my imaginary utility bike would be to complement my imaginary gaudy aggressive late 90s alu roadie.
Lava Domes because I like the way the look, they're fairly decent, the tt in 16" works for me, and because they have plenty of braze-ons. You can still score some good deals on ebay (assuming pickup):
This one is pretty sexy imo:
One more thing on this: is your choice of 1x9 vs. 2x9 directly related to the wheel size choices and if so, how? Genuine question.
1x9 was just related to the fact that the terrain isn't that hilly (I usually manage with an old SS) and I wouldn't be going fast so I thought 9 gears in a wide range would be enough. Especially if it was a more upright cruising and occasional halling bike. 2x9 was based on the idea of having a semi-compact double (something like 48t / 32t or 34t) and using it more for longer distance riding. For something like the Lava Dome which I reckon could take 650B 38mm tyres I wouldn't have thought you require much different gearing to a road bike. I haven't working out the difference in circumference, but from memory I thought a 700c 23mm was only a little bigger than a 650b in 38mm.
